4E 175 - The Elder Scrolls mysteriously disappear from the Imperial Library. The Elder Scrolls are scattered across Tamriel by forces unknown.
4E 175 - In the Second Seed, the month of The Shadow, the Breton named Lisette Frey is born in The Kingdom of Wayrest, a province in High Rock. She was born to a ladyservent of Captain Louis, a high-ranked captain in the army of the kingdom. Her father was unknown and her mother labeled a [censored]. But, Captain Louis’ estate kept it hidden from the public, in fear of people knowing they let a [censored] keep working there.
4E 175 - A Dark Brotherhood member, an Argonian named He-Who-Bleeds, witnesses the birth of Lisette Frey. He was spying on Captain Louis’ estate for his next assignment. He was to kill Captain Louis and, for a bonus, kill his mistress. He was spying on Captain Louis and his estate to find out who the mistress was. He thought nothing of the newborn baby at the time.
4E 175 - The Great War ends with the White-Gold Concordat. The peace treaty between the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion gives the Thalmor free rein to stamp out the worship of Talos throughout the Empire, and cedes a large section of southern Hammerfell.
4E 176 - A year later, He-Who-Bleeds found out who the mistress was. It was on Lisette Frey’s 1st birthday did Captain Louis’ finally made contact with his mistress again. Lisette’s mother, Louis’ ladyservent, went to Louis trying to blackmail him for their freedom. Lisette’s mother owed a debt to Louis, but he would no longer let her pay it, forcing her and Lisette to stay. For Lisette was his daughter too and he wanted her close. Lisette’s mother, his mistress, had had enough of hiding this fact.
With the year old Lisette sitting in the corner, her mother and father argued. But, He-Who-Bleeds had waited long enough. Through the window he snuck in, quietly, with only
Lisette noticing the strange man in the room, as her parents argued. He-Who-Bleeds turned invisible and walked up to Louis and his mistress. With a dragger in each hand, he stabs into both their throats, reappearing as his spell wears off and blood sprays on him. He withdraws his blades and both fall to the floor making death rattles before becoming still.
Lisette stared, confused, but after a few moments started to cry – though she was not fully aware of what happened. He-Who-Bleeds looked towards her as he put his blades away. He walked up and squats in front of her. Smiling, an Argonian smile at least, and sings a soft song before patting her head. After the song is done, Lisette no longer crying, he gets up and gently picks her up. He starts to sing again as she makes noises, not sure if she wants him to hold her.
4E 176 - Captain Louis and his ladyservent are found dead, Lisette Frey no where to be found.
4E 176 - He-Who-Bleeds appears in front of the leader of the Dark Brotherhood Wayrest Sanctuary with the child Lisette Frey. He told the leader his reasons and reminded the leader that he owed him still. The leader allowed the child to remain in the Dark Brotherhood and be raised by them.
He-Who-Bleeds reasons were simple, to him at least. He was raised by an old Argonian who was of the last generation of Shadowscales, the faction that no longer existed. The old Shadowscale stole He-Who-Bleeds as a child to raise him as if he was a Shadowscale, continuing what no longer existed. It used to be that if an Argonian child was born under the Shadow, they were taken to be trained as a Shadowscale. And a Shadowscale that survived to advlthood became a member of the Dark Brotherhood. Though not an Argonian, Lisette was born under the Shadow and reborned into the Dark Brotherhood through the blood of her mother and father. It was fate, he deemed.
So, Lisette Frey began her life in the Dark Brotherhood Wayrest Sanctuary.
4E 188 - For 12 years, Lisette Frey was raised as part of the Wayrest Sanctuary’s family. She was cared for and trained by the Sanctuary’s members. She rarely left the Sanctuary, only leaving if a family member allowed her to accompany them in an assignment. She was raised to believe in the family, the Void, the Night Mother, and the Dread Father. Her morals were distorted by those that raised her. But, she did not lose all hope of having humanity. She became a confused young girl, because despite all she was learning and all the affection she had and received from her family members – she doubted it all, doubted all she learned and her feelings for the others. The vague memory of her mother’s death, by the hands of her guardian He-Who-Bleeds, haunted her. She hated yet cared for He-Who-Bleeds and for the Dark Brotherhood. But, she feared leaving. Feared him killing her, and feared losing the only life she knew.
In the recent years, her training really began. She learned ways of stealth, of potions and poisons, and of the blade – both from stealth and non-stealth combat. She had talented and was naturally skilled, her family members kept saying, she was born to be an assassin. Lisette started to believe it, even if there were doubts. Maybe this was the way of Silthis. Though a Breton, and other members using magic, He-Who-Bleeds forbid anyone teaching her it and told her to never use it. He never told her the reason.
4E 188 - Wayrest falls to corsairs.
4E 188 - Wayrest was in the hands of pirates, He-Who-Bleeds knew it wouldn’t be long before the Sanctuary was discovered and conflict occurred. He decided that Lisette should flee. She was not ready for a real fight and he was not sure they could win. After all these years, he had developed affection towards Lisette and, after all, they were family. So he packed her a few things, normal cloths and food along with some gold, and gave her one of his most treasured daggers. Not but a day after Wayrest had fallen, He-Who-Bleeds and Lisette fled the Sanctuary heading towards the outstretches of Wayrest. After a few days out of Wayrest province and at the far reaches of Evermore, He-Who-Bleeds bid farewell to Lisette. He told her to keep going to Jehanna, which is on the border of Skyrim, and then continue to Skyrim. In Skyrim, she should be able to find the Dark Brotherhood again – he told her.
Lisette Frey was confused on what was happening, why she must flee. She asked why he would not come with her. He told her he was needed back home, that he could not leave their family. That she must flee, because they want to protect her. He left her and she stood there unsure. But, part of her realized that she was free now. She was free. And she continued on her way.
4E 188 - Corsairs that had seized Wayrest, raid the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary there, destroying it.
4E 188 - Lisette Frey gets lost, not having travelled on her own before. She kills for the first time, taking the life of a wolf that attacks her. Before she can come to grips with the blood, another is not far behind (they usually travel in pack no?) and she kills it too, suffering an injury on her arm. As she realizes that she had to kill them, they were attacking her, she can’t get past the blood that invokes the memory of her mother. Remembering her mother, she remembered He-Who-Bleeds, and how it was to travel with him. Heck, how it was to travel with any family member. The bandits that attacked, had to be killed by them. Guards that asked too many questions. The targets on the assignments. So much had to be killed. If a bandit attacked her, could she kill him? Could she kill like He-Who-Bleeds killed her mother?
A part of her answered yes, she was an assassin of course. She was part of the Dark Brotherhood. Was she not? But, a part of her said no. She was free now. She didn’t have to be like them. Then again, if a bandit attacked her…what choice did she have? As she travels, battling these thoughts, she comes upon a lone house. She looks at her arm, which she had wrapped and taken a potion for, but it wasn’t healed yet. Getting help from an advlt would be good. Plus, the safety of a building was welcoming. She could only hope there was someone friendly in it. But, she gripped her dagger as she grew nearer. Her life hadn’t been filled with friendly faces. Her life had been filled with blood and death.
4E 188 - When she snuck through the window of that lone house, she was no sooner grabbed by Old Man Glenn. He looked at her, one eye glassed over, and then put her down with a smile. He asked her who taught her to not use a door. She remained silent. She was unsure of trusting the old man, attacking him, or escaping. But, she was just a 13-year-old girl. The world was widely unknown to her and the idea of leaving the house made her more uneasy than staying. She needed an advlt.
He nodded at her silence and casted a healing magic on her arm before walking to a cabinet. He got food and placed it on the table along with something to drink. He sat at the table and waited. The food was hard to resist and she slowly went to the table to eat. Silence filled the house as she ate, but after she was done he asked her her name. She answered Lisette Frey. He asked more questions, and she decided to talk with him. She was going to tell him only what he needed to know. She knew the Dark Brotherhood was looked on with fear and had no plan on revealing her connection with them.
He found out that she was fleeing Wayrest, that it was raided by pirates. That her family remained behind and had her flee. She was alone and had no place to go. She had thought of Skyrim and the Dark Brotherhood. But, again the world was large and scary, she did not want to go. He offered to take care of her, until there was news from Wayrest, and Lisette decided to take a chance and stay.
4E 198 - 10 years had passed, and 23-year-old Lisette Frey was still at that lone house. She would come to call it luck or fate. That after the tragic beginning to her life and her dark upbringing, it would be balanced out by meeting Old Man Glenn and his son Jen. Where she would learn of magic and what it meant to be a hero.
Old Man Glenn, she learned, use to be an adventurer, a battle mage. But, when his wife died, he felt guilty for being away all the time, and decided to settle down and take care of his son. Missing his wife, he started to think killing was wrong. At least, he no longer wanted to cause death himself. He gave up his old life.
It took a while to fully trust Old Man Glenn, but soon Lisette did. Neither of them talked about Wayrest again nor did Old Man Glenn question her about her past. It was as if he knew she wanted to forget it, or it no longer mattered to him where she came from. They grew close.
Old Man Glenn was surprised that she knew no proper spells, for he could tell she had a strong magical aura. He decided to teach her some. At first it was healing magic, some illusion and alteration too. Protection spells mostly. But, when she picked up on it quickly and seemed very skilled, he started to teach her low level magic of every school. He started to tell her about the College of Winterhold, which he attended for some time, and about how useful magic was. He said magic was use to protect yourself, and if you were good, protect others. He didn’t want to teach her dangerous magics, but in order to get her ready for the college, she needed to be know the basics of all the magics.
Old Man Glenn wasn’t the only one that taught her or cared for her. His advlt son Jen often came to the house to spend time with Lisette. He was a guard in the near-by town, though it was easy to tell he was not happy as a guard. He had grown up admiring his adventurer father and wanted to become an adventurer himself. But, when his father settled down, he felt he had to remain close to him. It was what his mother would have wanted. So, he became a guard.
Jen was different from his father, young and adventurous, and not as peaceful minded. He told Lisette that in order to protect the innocent, you had to destroy the evil. The only good way to stop a bandit was to kill him. He continued Lisette’s lessons on the blade, not questioning her beginning skill in it. He taught her fury, the aggressive of the illusion school, and told her of the high-level alteration spell paralyze. He told Lisette of adventure stories, of what Old Man Glenn use to be, and excited her with talk of caves and ruins.
Her skills in stealth did not stop. She often snuck out of the house at night and went to the town, or she remained in the town longer than needed when getting supplies for Old Man Glenn. She snuck into people houses and in dark corners of the town, stealing and pickpocketing what she could. Sam, a member of her Dark Brotherhood family, had taught her how to steal when he took her out for assignments. He use to be a thief before joining the family, and said that having extra pocket money didn’t hurt, plus if you can get close enough to pickpocket someone, then you can easily get close enough to slit their throat. She was confused on how she felt about her time in the Dark Brotherhood, but she could not deny that it was a part of her. She felt that stealth was natural and it felt safe.
With her spare gold she spent time in the potion shop and asked for lessons from the lady that own it.
She only got close to Old Man Glenn and Jen. Never befriending people in the town and turning down a boy or two. Her life was good.
4E 199 - Old Man Glenn had fallen sick, and as time passed he would not recover. He died in his sleep one night.
4E 199 - After Jen and Lisette buried Old Man Glenn, they stood there. Lisette was unsure what to do now without Old Man Glenn. Jen though, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted to travel and be an adventurer. Jen asked Lisette if she wanted to come with him. Lisette thought about. She knew what Old Man Glenn would have wanted. He had been preparing her for the Collage of Winterhold in Skyrim. But, again, that was unknown world to her. The chance to stay with someone she knew, who had taught her for 10 years, was tempting. Not only that, but the chance at adventure was tempting. To explore the unknown world with someone felt safer. She said yes.
4E 200 - It had been a year and a few months. During her time with Jen, Lisette learned how to live as an adventurer. How to travel and hunt and take care of yourself on the road. She also learned how to kill. No, that would be incorrect. Since a child she had been learning how to kill. Now though, she had finally killed and was comfortable with it. At first it was hard, but as she and Jen explored caves and came across bandit camps, she had grown more accustom to killing humans and creatures and otherworldly things. After saving some people, she had a taste of how it felt to be a hero.
Jen and her were different though. He only knew magic and combat, she was more comfortable fighting from stealth. After they talked about that, Jen wanted proof of her skill.
So she took out a bandit cave on her own, and no sounds were ever heard from the cave as Jen waited outside. So, after that, she would go in and thin the ranks of a camp, and he would follow afterwards to take out the rest. Or Jen would distract a creature and she would sneak up behind it.
4E 200 - Jen was killed in combat. Thus is the life of an adventurer.
4E 201 – Lisette Frey, age 26, travels to Skyrim to finally fulfill Old Man Glenn’s wishes of her becoming a full mage of the College of Winterhold.
4E 201 - Lisette Frey is captured at the border of Skyrim.
