aCreature reskin - assigning animations, .kf, etc

I know I've done this before, but it was literally nearly a decade ago.

I am reskinning a creature, and making it a new creature in the CS. I have copied the .nif and .kf, and renamed them. I have kept "x" at the front of both filenames, and they are identical apart from the file extension, and are in the same directory, in Meshes.

After doing all the textures, etc, I have assigned the .nif to the creature in the CS, but the animation button is greyed out, and the game crashes with no animation errors if I load the creature ingame.

I tried to assign the animation if nifskope (though I don't think I had to do this last time!) and it said that .kf file was the wrong type (but it's not! it's identical to the normal morrowind creature .kf!)

Any help much appreciated!
