Exclusives, What are they good for?

Post » Sun Mar 07, 2010 5:44 pm

After i brought Fallout: New Vegas i played the game a bit then got bored and started to wait for the first DLC, the i hear about it and check it out and its a Xbox 360 exclusive. So whats the point of these exclusives all i see them doing is getting a lot of people angry. And i just hope that TESV will not have any exclusives, what are your thoughts on this?

Agreed. I enjoyed my DLC for Oblivion, but wasn't huge into it. But for the sake of those who are, it would not seem fair to cut off one group of players from some awesome DLC.

Pretty sure they get money from Microsoft for the 360 exclusive DLC.

I'm pretty sure about that too. My guess is there's a time limit on it, and when that time's up it'll be released for the other platforms. Just a guess mind you.

I would say that developing games that are exclusive to certain platforms has its advantages as it allows developers to develope the game specifically with a platform in mind and take full advantage of its features, and not need to make compromises to make the game work well on all platforms. But when you've already released the game on multiple platforms, I see no benefit that the addons for it being denied to certain platforms could serve, not to customers, anyway. I'd imagine there's some sort of benefit for Bethesda to make the DLC Xbox 360 exclusive, because otherwise, preventing portions of their customer base from using it would seem like a bad idea, since it serves only to make the people who don't get the DLC angry, and also limits potential customers to those playing the game on a specific platform, thus meaning less profits. My guess is they made some sort of deal with Microsoft. Hopefully, though, it's only temporary, and they'll still release it for PC and PS3 later. Downloadable content isn't really that important to me, but if you're going to make a multiplatform game it doesn't seem fair to make some content only available to those who buy it on a specific platform.

All that really does is alienate the platform(s) that aren't fortunate enough to get some of the DLC loving.

To answer the question, the only thing that I can see that exclusivity is good for is a ton of extra cash for Bethesda. All they have to do is agree to release the DLC on a particular platform first, then afetr that period is over they can release it for the other platforms, thus increasing their profits. It stinks, and I don't like exclusives any more than anybody else here, but it is business. If you don't profit in business, then you will be out of business.

What I'd like to see is the DLCs going away all together and the expansions return.. way better. But yea exclusives are so annoying, even more so when it comes to releases. I'm sick of hearing asbout how awesome some games are and then realize they're console exclusive.

Does the PC get the DLC at the same time the 360 does in Bethesda games?

That's true, PC players do have that, even so, it seems that there's still at least some portion of Bethesda's PC fanbase that gets the DLC even if it is outdone by mods. And in any case, the PS3 gamers don't get mods.

What I'd like to see is the DLCs going away all together and the expansions return.

I'd say we can have both, but I too would much rather get an expansion than multiple DLCs, if it comes down to a choice between the two.

I hope there are no exclusives too, but tbh, I'm not holding my breath, as the money they must get from it must be huge if they're willing to piss off so many fans (you only need to head over to the New Vegas forums to see just how pissed off they are). It does svck hard, but I suppose business is business :( Am I right in thinking Oblivion had exclusives too?

Yes, Beth had just started going into the PS3 market though so maybe it was a techincal issue. The PS3 never got the DLC, but did get SI and KotN, they got them after quite some time though, I believe there are details concerning exact dates on the respective UESP and Wikipedia articles.

More $$$ for Bethesda, courtesy Microsoft. <_<

I hope they stop with this "exclusive DLC" crap, it is really rude to the customers who own other platforms.

AND OH, I wonder who could be responsible for deciding to pursue exclusive DLC. Hmm, hmm, hmmm... *stares at list of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethesda_Softworks listed on wikipedia* Yes... who is responsible...

It's a simple business agreement. It's likely that Beth gets a better royalty or profit margin from M$ for making the DLC exclusive. M$ drives sales of the game and consoles by having exclusive rights to these add-ons. The FONV DLC was released right around the holiday season this year, which would make the deal more impactful for both parties. Even though these are considered "exclusive", in all likelihood there is a time frame for exclusivity. So in fact it just means that other platforms have to wait, but will eventually have access to all DLC.

Look at the big picture here. Anything that helps keep Beth in the black is a GOOD thing. IF you want to have TES games beyond Skyrim that is. Beth has to make a profit to keep making games. It's that simple.

Soo... more royalties via M$ vs. profits from PC and PS3 users? Hmm, hmm, hmm. Getting the DLC shaft from yet another bethesda game is not high on anyone's "oh, I love you so much" list.

What can I say? Money talks. I'm sure there is a time limit on this "exclusive" though, and the other platforms will get it.

It's a sign of the times.

No exclusives would be great.

But it all depends on money, greed ,and microsoft.(Forgot how interchangeable those words are)

But yeah its usually a few months before DLC is available for other platforms. But still annoying.

Except for perhaps the xbox players, which will undoubtedly represent the largest segment of sales for the game.

Beth will have to share profits from the PC and PS3 DLC as well and since these will be limited time exclusives they are not losing those profits, just postponing. It's just that with the M$ deal they'll get a larger % of the profit. So in the end it's a wise business decision. And ultimately Beth is a company with shareholders who demand ROI. I'd rather that Beth run the company effectively (to ensure years of TES to come) rather than try to appeal to some nebulous altruism to make everyone under the sun happy and ultimately fail at that as well.

2 pennies.
