A few Problems We're having with Fallout New Vegas

Post » Fri Mar 12, 2010 5:07 pm

The game itself is very fun and I’m a really big fan but there are some serious problems (that are plaguing me and friends) and I can only put up with so much:

Freezing- I've only had this game for 2 weeks but it freezes up my ps3 more than anything else. Since I did play Fallout 3 I wasn't expecting perfection but I also wasn't expecting to do a hard shut down 3 or 4 times in one night. That's not good for the console and sometimes it happens in between loading which corrupts the autosave and I have to go back to my last manual save of which I now have to make many.

Unfinishable Quests - I find myself going back to old saves because an objective isn't where it's supposed to be according to the mission marker.

"Exclusive" DLC - yea, I know it's a timed exclusive, I'm just surprised this crap is still going on. It would've been nice if we were told about it when we were pre-ordering rather than the day before launch. Smooth move.
Not that I'm all that interested in getting any of it. If this dlc messes up this game as badly as the Fallout 3 DLC messed that game up, New Vegas will be rendered completely unplayable.

Broken Radio Randomizer- I dig Wayne Newton but he keeps playing the same 4 songs over and over again. I also dig the songs that are there but after hearing Johnny Retar 80 times in a row I'm ready to go Mysterious Stranger on someone. Not that having the other dozen songs playable would make a huge difference: this game can go on for a while (when it isn't constantly freezing) and the radio (even if it worked properly) has enough music for a short downloadable game episode. This is the main reason I wish I had the 360 version. Not to get some overpriced and buggy dlc but so I can hear more than 4 different songs while I play this.
You really need to patch in a custom soundtrack option for ps3 users.

It seems that so far, the patching for this game (as well as Fallout 3) has solved some of the more minor bugs and exploits but doesn’t remedy the really bad game-breaking bugs like the freezing and unfinishable quests. I hope you don’t just give up on this game they way you did on Fallout 3.

List of things you need to do:
-fix the constant freezing that requires the hard shut down
-fix the bugged quests that can be rendered unfinishable: let me know if you need more specific details.
-patch in a custom soundtrack option for the ps3

On paper this is a really good game that I would like to play through 3 or 4 times but at this point it’s getting to be more frustrating than fun and I don’t feel like putting up with it anymore.

They havn't been able to fix the freezing for fallout 3, so i doubt they are even trying to fix it for NV.

Yea.
I should probably sell it now while I can get a good price.

I am also little pissed of when the game crashes over 5 times a day. Sometimes when I'm just walking in the wasteland and an enemy shows up game freezes, or the screen goes black and I just hear the sound. Only option is to force my playstation 3 to shut down, for example in lucky 38 casino I can't go out when I have gone in (Same thing in Fallout 3 when I couldn't go inside Tenpenny tower). Luckily I just saved before going in, so it was not such a big deal, but now I can't do the main quest.

But still I like to do the side quests and New Vegas is actually really a good game, but it would be great if bugs would be fixed.

If I hear "Jingle Jangle" ONE MORE TIME ON THAT DAMN RADIO THAT SEEMS TO BE EVERYWHERE...I'm going to kill everyone in the Mojave Wasteland then blow my brains out IN REAL LIFE. Other than that, and the rampant glitches and freezing, not too bad a game.

I don't know about not being able to fix the freezing issues i played fallout 3 for a couple hundred hours and only had to hard restart around 5 times (Even with all DLC's installed) and Fo3 and FO:NV run on the same engine so. I'd assume they'd be able to fix it. I've played NV for 40+ hours and have had at least twice as many freezes requiring a hard restart as in Fo3..

Tell me about it.
Last night I swear I heard Big Iron twice in a row. Good song but I'm really getting sick of that one too.

It really is the main reason I wish I had the PC or 360 version: to customize the soundtrack.

The freezing should be their main priority but the ps3 version really needs the custom soundtrack patched in too. It would be great if they could integrate it with the radio stations so I can still listen to Wayne's take on things. He's great. He just needs some more tunes and a real randomizer.

Every time? That's bad.
It really doesn't take much for this game. The other day, I turned on the ps3, popped in this game, loaded up the save, and the game froze before it even started.
Over the weekend I had another unique experience: this has never happened to me with a console game. I was playing for about 15 mins when the game didn't just freeze, it crashed to the "desktop." One second I'm playing, the screen goes black and then I'm on the xmb.
The thing that worries me the most is that I'm sure all these hard shut downs and crashes aren't good for the machine. I should get rid of this game just to save my console.

I've started a thread discussing the technical aspects related to a certain type of game engine lock-up, when the engine halts, the PS3 HDD activity indicator goes black, but the ambient sound continues.
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1139166-theory-on-full-lock-freezing-cause/

My take on this is that the processes that are accessing your HDD get into a deadlock with each other. When roaming or loading the wasteland, we're getting a game engine shutter, like the frame rate hiccup while walking the wasteland. If something else is trying to access the HDD for data at the same time this wasteland data buffer hiccup is happening, the engine game engine grinds to a halt, with each process waiting for the other.

Although the problems with the game engine wasteland data buffer may not be solved (inherent in the entire structure of the engine), hopefully they will patch the process precedence issues for individual conflicting process locks.

In the mean time, I would recommend turning off all auto-save functionality, and it removes a few of the processes that are trying to get access to the HDD. I've found that this eliminated my lock-ups when exiting buildings, although I still can get lockups while roaming the wasteland if I push the pace and find some additional events while getting the game engine hiccups.
