Have you tried using MGE for its macro capabilities? You could bind console to something else.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why so many people have issues using the tilde in Morrowind? Is it non-US standard keyboards that have the issue, or keyboard driver issues, or what?

its just the smae issue in oblivion, ill just grab the info about it:
4.19 I can't use the cheat console and I am using Windows Media Center Edition.

You need to unplug the receiver for your remote control:
http://vgstrategies.about.com/od/pccheatst/a/OblivionMediaPC.htm

Also, open My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini (it is the Configuration File named "Oblivion") and make sure bAllowConsole is set to 1. You can do a quick search for the term using CTRL+F.

If you're using Vista and still having problems, check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927824/en MS Knowledge Base article (thanks to TheCrux).

didnt know MGE did that, thanks

I found something that does the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17187, but other than that MGE's probably your best bet. That, or talk Fliggerty into waving his magic wand...

I did some googling, and found http://www.techsupportforum.com/gaming-forum/pc-gaming-support/195429-morrowind-tilde-issue-vista.html, which is pretty much what you already said. But the last post in that thread links to another forum, with a http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=450163#p450163. I have no idea if it'd work, but its something to try. Make sure to back up your registry beforehand, and all that.

There are a couple of solutions listed in the Vista Problems thread stickied in the hardware problems & Trouble shooting forum. The only solution that I found would work for my computer (an HP) was to change the keyboard driver to a standand 101 keyboard driver.

Some of the stuff I came across mentioned changing a regional setting to English (US), and/or trying combination's of keys, like "ctrl + ~", or "alt + ~". You've probably tried that suff, just thought I'd bring it up in case.

I believe that it has something to do with the media software built into Vista(possibly 7 as well) and infrared receivers(remote control for media center). There is a device(forget which ATM) which can be (temporarily removed -- it appears to be undead and returns at reboot) that will allow the ~ to access the console. This is a problem with EVERY game that uses the '~' key to open a console or do ANYTHING.

It's EXTREMELY annoying.

I knew about this for a LONG time now, and also knew that MGE might allow me to get to the console, but I haven't bothered trying yet as I've had no need to in mw yet(fortunately). Already had the ring of console for Oblivious.

You mention getting an error but fail to specify what that is - are you trying to remap the tilde key?

MGE's Key Remapper is currently broken, and won't do what you want in any case since you'd just be redirecting the problem to a different key (i.e. remapping the keyboard code which is what's not getting recognized). Instead, you want to follow the proper procedure and launch MGE's Macro Editor to bind the Console1 function to another key (like F2).
