Getting Daggerfall and Arena running

Post » Sat Mar 13, 2010 6:00 pm

I know theres threads on getting Daggerfall to run already on here, and I'm really not trying to spam thread at all but I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to dosbox stuff.

I'm one step away from buying Daggerfall on ebay and I wanna make sure it can run on vista or XP. I have 2 computers, one with vista one with XP and as long as I can get it to work once I d/l dosbox I'll get it (i'll probably be back here for help installing haha *tear* ) Anyway if someone can confirm that for me I'd really appreciate it =)

My other question is, can I run arena using the same instructions/program? and is there any easy way to get a hold of arena, cause I barely find any copies online.

thanks in advance =)

Getting it to run on Vista is...challenging to say the least. I could not install it through DOSBox, so I had to get a windows compatible installer, move the folder to the dosbox directory and then run it from there and I still can't get the patch to install right (I can't figure out why).

As far as running it, it runs smoother than it did under XP (except fullscreen is buggy, but that's a dosbox compatibility problem).

Also, Arena is available for free from Bethesda, found http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm.

If you use Vista, be sure to run http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Dosbox_and_Vista. Or installations and configurations and so on won't work well.

Arena is a http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm, so no need to search for a copy.

I had no problems myself in Vista, neither with patching or installing. Fullscreen works fine for me as well. The only thing I had to do there was set "Aspect=" to "true", so that it covered the entire screen, though that might cause slowdowns on certain systems from what I've gathered. I've only tested it on two Vista systems, one with Business (my crappy work laptop), the other with Ultimate (my not crappy desktop), and both run it just fine.

It's still not an issue with Vista it self. It might need different configurations from the XP version, or there might be some problems with Dosbox not liking the drivers, or some application that interfering with it, so try to update the drivers, make a clean boot and try again. Of course if you have it working somewhere else there is no reason to do it, as long as distance isn't the problem.

I had extreme issues trying to get it to run on vista, I followed the instructions but some files failed to get copied, some Vista did not allow to run, yadda yadda.

But XP installation went smoothly, without a single hitch.

Hm. Well, I did manage to fail to mention that I've disabled several of Vista's "security features" and such, so I might have disabled certain things that might actually hinder you to do certain things.

You have to disable "User Account Control", or install it on a seperate drive, otherwise Vista will get in the way.
I think there's a pretty detailed explanation elsewhere on this site.
Yes, I own Daggerfall, No it's not for sale.

By the way, it's really buggy, you need patch V.2.13 (I think)

hmm interesting points. Is it easier to install on XP? I'm not a total newbie but I don't have a lot of experience with dosbox or any of the things I've seen in the "installing Daggerfall" tutorial on websites and such.
