Cool Suggestions For Xbox Live Arcade

Post » Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:12 am

I know this is a funky subject but i was scrolling through the xbox arcade and found Banjo-Kazooie & Tooie, then i thought why not put fallout on there? If somebody says its because the controls wouldn't work, we could plug our keyboards in. I think the 360's hard drive could be able to hold it without a problem, but what do you people think? :lightbulb:

They have the old marathon series on XBL, and you can use keyboards/chatpads on the xbox too. Meh, it would work, but not overly well.

Seeing as I already own it, I don't think I'd be interested in getting it just because it was on Live. :)

I could see it working, though. Point and click could be a little bit difficult to get right with a controller, but it's a turn-based game so it's not like it would have to be all that responsive, either...

Only Marathon 2. M1 and Infinity aren't up. Bungie still owns them and now Bungie owns themselves, so MS has to ask permission.

Nah, it'd be fairly unplayable even with a keyboard. It's a mouse driven game, and it'd be a headache using the controller. Also the standard 640 x 480 resolution would look horrible on a TV. Better to just pick up a copy for the PC.

Fallout 1 would totally svck on xbox. The controls would be [censored] :shakehead: . And its almost 1 gig and most xbox's only have a tiny 20 gb hardrive. Not sure why since a 20gb hardrive costs like 10 bucks if that

Sorry for double post but. FYI - Most of the older TV's people have that are CRT the default Reso is 640x480. Only tv's with higher reso's are LCD/Plasma

If they can make perfectly functionable RTS games on consoles at this point, I don't see how doing a point-and-click turn-based game would be all that much of a hurdle, really. You could play Fallout 1 and 2 just fine with just the mouse - you have plenty of buttons on a console controller to function as shortcut keys (and you don't even need many of them - either.) And I've been playing turn-based games on consoles since PS1 days, I don't think a Fallout port would really work all that incredibly different than Final Fantasy Tactics, when you get right down to it...

It's not like the old interface was all that complex, or anything.

Left thumbstick controls the cursor, right thumbstick controls the map scrolling. A button would be a left-click, B button would be right-click. And you still have plenty of buttons for shortcut keys (like the should buttons working as a sort of tab key to highlight the UI buttons - and the bumpers to scroll through your weapon options.)

Not that hard really - and again, it's a turn-based game, so you're not going to need it to be all that responsive in the first place.

You're on these forums, so you obviously have a PC that can run Fallout. Just buy the game on the PC, it's really not that difficult... honest.

Seriously, it wouldn't work for a multitude of reasons most of which have already been explained. It certainly wouldn't be any better on the XBox, so unless you have some sort of computer-phobia I don't see the point.

1 gig really isn't that much for a game. In fact, some demo's on XBL marketplace are over a gigabyte.

I know. Im just saying 1 gig is alot for an Xbox. Its taking up 1-20th of the HD. The cost of Xbox hardrives are ridiculous. Cheapest i can find a 20gb HD for Xbox is like 75 dollars. Even though i can buy a normal hardrive thats 1 Terabyte ( 1000 gbs ) for like 69.99

They managed to turn a naturally mouse controller game such as Halo Wars and put that onto a controller platfrom, Its easily done, and you have keyboards which can be plugged into the xbox and the controller mounted chatpad. Just a patch here and there to allow compatibility, Do it! Dooo it!

Except Halo Wars was built from the ground up to use a controller interface.

The problems with the idea of Fallout 1+2 tend to circle around how viable it would be.

The effort of reworking controllers so you can play if you don't have a keyboard. There were a keys that did a particular thing, such as hotkeyying various commands.

The graphics: Doesn't matter how good the games were, a lot of people who've never played them are just as likely to take one look at a screenshot and say 'looks crap' referring entirely to the graphics. In fact, how many times have we had a review posted on these forums and the poster always critisizes the graphics? Conveniently forgetting how old the games actually are in relation to modern games.

Is it financially viable? Considering all the work and time that will be needed to rework the controls, streamline the coding and eliminate some of the game breaking bugs, is it going to be worth it? How many people are actually going to buy it in contrast to the number of xbox consoles actually sold?

Finally, who's going to do said work?

Black Isle? Unfortunately, Black Isle is no more and it's staff are now spread around a fair bit.

Interplay? Again unlikely, for the simple reason they can't afford to gamble on a project like this. They are in dire straits financially and I doubt the head honchos would be interested in setting up a project time, even if they could.

Bethesda? They've already said that they aren't interested in picking up and finishing someone elses project in the form of Van Buren, so I really can't see that they'll be interested in working on a game that was completed and released in the days of sprites.

It just isn't going to happen, no ones going to see it as financially viable. No matter how many people on these forums claim they'd buy them.

I'd love to see a remake of any of the previous Fallout games with the Fallout 3 engine (as isometric turn based remakes OR in the FPS style of Fallout 3).

As for simply porting F1 or 2 to XBL, it would need some changes to work well.

I wouldn't. I very much hope Bethesda won't try to remake the original games in any form.

Why not? A remake in no way invalidates the original(s). It wont happen either way... but I can dream.
