Stuck in original Fallout

Post » Wed Mar 17, 2010 6:41 am

I'm hoping one of you old school Fallout vets can give me a small hand here. I'm playing through the original Fallout game that comes with the Fallout Trilogy disc and as I understand it is version 1.2 of the game. I know that there were a bunch of different versions of Fallout so I'm not exactly sure which version of the game I have, the 1.2 US version I read supposedly removed children from the game but I have children running around in my game so is this the european version??

Anyway I'm doing my quests in the Hub right now and just got through finishing the first quest given out by Decker (The hit on the Hightowers), I've come back to Decker to claim my reward and exp but Kane just threatens me when I talk to him and eventually begins combat if I continue to try to talk. I have tried everything I can imagine from different conversation selections with Hightower (Sending Decker's regards, etc) to being the one that shoots Decker and wife myself instead of allowing my companions to get these 2 kill shots. Nothing works; Kane simply threatens me again and again.

Has there been any reports of issues of this before or is this some new special bug introduced in the Fallout Trilogy compilation. Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

Your best bet is to install the unofficial patches to the game. They fix a lot of the bugs that the developers never fixed even with the official patches. They can be found in one of the sticky posts. And do this for Fallout 2 and Tactics as well. http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=681908 is the thread I am talking about. As for Fallout 2, I highly recommend you download the Restoration mod that thread has. But when you install it don't install the AP Ammo mod as it makes the final boss fight impossible to win.

It was not the US version that removed children from the game, it was the UK version that removed children from the game.

If you have the newest Fallout Trilogy pack (ubisofts, I think it is? - at least in Europe), Interplay has just made a new patch for this trilogy, I think? You need to download this...

as well as the unoffical patches.

All can be found at the no mutants allowed website...
(just do a google search)

Do you enter the basemant Decker is in yourself after you do the hit on Hightower? Because as I recall, you have to speak to the guy at the door to the basemant on the ground level, and follow him downstairs to be let in. If you let yourself in, they will consider you some kind of trespasser and turn hostile. Otherwise, I never really had a problem with it, and I played the unpatched version of Fallout 1 back in the day.

Thanks for the responses AC and aries. Yes I have the latest version of the Fallout Trilogy, at least I think it is as I bought it last week.

The only official patch that was released is an optional use patch in case of a sound problem with Fallout Tactics. In a week's worth of gaming, F1 has so far crashed on me on 4 occasions but this is the first quest I found broken.

I installed the unofficial patches for a second time, this time correctly following the instructions and again my saves were corrupted, sigh. I uninstalled/reinstalled the game again since I had this time copied a backup of my saves. So I'm guessing the unofficial patches only work with new games? So yeah these didn't work out for me so I guess I'll play the game bugged.

@Salival: I try to speak to Kane (Decker's bodyguard) so that he takes me downstairs like he did before I accepted the quest. The problem is that Kane's dialogue box doesn't open at all. Instead there is a small message in red above the character in the world that says something like "Do you value your life?" and "Leave now, don't try my patience". If I try to talk to him 3 times in a row he turns hostile and attacks. If I try to go to the door myself he stops me and says "Only I can open the door", but he never talks to me to allow me back downstairs.

Thanks :foodndrink:

No I didn't have my weapon drawn. I have no idea why it happened it's as if Kane treats me as if I had refused the quest or something to that effect and keeps warning me off until going hostile.

I tried different responses both for Decker when accepting and Hightower before the hit, I made both killshots myself in case my followers killing one somehow trumped the quest. I went to different areas and came back to Kane to see if he would refresh somehow, I even waited different intervals of time of day/night to see if it had something to do with the hour. Nothing helped.

I got the exp from the combat and kills but Lane will not take me to see Decker again to reclaim the reward, plus I can't be then given the assassination quest for Jain. Since I did yet another reinstall I made it last night back to the Hub again so I'm starting all these quests over, maybe I'll have better luck second time around

Thanks for the suggestions.

Here's a thought - Did you kill the wife as well? I'm fairly sure she has to be wacked as well, along with all the other witnesses.

Yeah I did agent_c, in fact one theory I tested is making sure I whacked both him and his wife myself in case there was some bug if a companion killed them. It made no difference, Kane was always unwilling to open a dialogue box and goes hostile after the 3rd attempt.

I'll be playing the Hub again tonight, I hope I have better luck with this quest, if not I'll just turn Decker in to the Sheriff and miss out on the exp and caps from Hightower.

I'm surprised how buggy this game is, you'd think they would have fixed most of the bugs at some point all the way back from '97.

I hope Fallout 2 is less buggy, but given the statement that the unofficial patch fixes over 800 bugs certainly is disheartning. Maybe that unofficial patch will actually work unlike F1

Oh well, back to :fallout:

Well Interplay has been going downhill under its current leadership, and it just lost all rights to the Fallout franchise to Bethesda.

As for Fallout 2 having more bugs, its a much bigger game with more stuff you can do, so its going to have more bugs.

True AC, both Interplay sure had enough time to fix them before Bethesda got the license, had they wanted to invest the resources.

I mean in 1 week of playing the game crashed on me 4 times to desktop and gave me some of those "001x231 caused a fatal exception program had to close" small error pop up boxes.

But you know what, I'll stop complaining about that; I still can't play Mass Effect longer than 4 hours in one continuous playthrough or the game inexplicably goes berserk. If I could finish that one several times, I sure can finish Fallout. Just wish there weren't apparent quest breakers like this one.

I understand about F2 of course, bigger game = bigger bugs. I'll continue to enjoy it nonetheless.
