Morrowind on Mac?

Post » Thu Nov 29, 2012 6:47 am

Looking to see how I could get Morrowind running on Mac. Preferably any option that doesn't require me to have a copy of a Windows OS. Any suggestions?

Two options:

1) Wine
2) Use Windows

May you explain this Wine?

You'll have to use BootCamp, I'm afraid. I believe that you can download Windows 7 from Microsoft, but when I did it, I just bought and installed Windows 8 instead.

Runs well enough, though if you've got a 13", the graphics card doesn't really have a lot of options.

It's a compatibility layer for *nix systems, which Mac OS heavily derives from, to handle things such as the Windows executable environment and Windows API calls.

In layman's terms, it allows one to run most software compiled for Windows under a *nix system.

So where do I get it? And would I still purchase Morrowind from, say, Steam?

A simple search on Google would've sufficed: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-5969e0ddd42aeb4a83f0804b90e5ba1e45c92788

You'll have to check the documentation to see if there's anything special you need to do. If you have questions, as their community over there. If you don't want to go that route, you need a copy of Windows.

The https://openmw.org/faq/ brand new engine for Morrowind is supposed to be compatible with Mac, but a 1.0 release is pretty far off.

I actually just went through this with my Macbook. I used PlayOnMac (it's free! no need to buy Windows just for Morrowind), which seems like it's basically Wine but more user-friendly maybe (I haven't actually used Wine to compare though). I had a few problems at first but I think once I installed the expansions everything fixed itself. I can't find the guide I used now, but I think http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Linux#Wine_Settings is basically the same thing. I used the discs, but I would think Steam would work just as well. If you have any issues, I found that the advice for Wine on Linux would usually work for PlayOnMac.
