Some thoughts on first playthrough of Honest Hearts

Ive been holding off on this one for a long while, and now leaves only Dead Money unplayed (and likely to stay that way) but I was surprised and impressed

Things that annoyed me: The magical disappearing compass markers for locations. That was cute. Though after finishing the main quest in Zion I had only missed 3 locations but nonetheless, damn you. Follows-Chalk combat was misleading. I had to check the wiki to see that his combat tag was Melee, yet his comments when switching him between melee and ranged leads the player to believe that hes better with a gun. One thing that bothered me more than anything else was the snarky dialogue choices the Courier gets. I felt like an angsty teenager with some of the choices I could make and I noticed it alot in OWB too. In the vanilla game the dialogue choices range from serious to neutral to smart-assy yet it feels whomever is writing ('was writing' I have to remind myself *tear*) the dialogue trees for the DLCs was a bit too one sided

things i liked: Most of it to be honest. Obviously HH has been out a long while and Ive been playing FONV off and on for the majority of the two years its been out and yet this is the first time Im playing this DLC. I wanted to hate Honest Hearts, I did, but I like it much more than Lonesome Road and Wild Wasteland: The Add On, that is, OWB. The Survivalist backstory was intense and very moving and Zion itself was very pretty, getting the most out of a dated engine. The enemies were neither contrived nor ridiculously difficult nor just plain annoying like say, Lobotomites and even the non-humanoid enemies fit very well with the setting and difficulty level (except you, Giant Cazador). Another big thing I liked was the love shown to Survival, which was really the biggest thing that broke my reluctance to buy HH. Also, Graham was disappointing, and only because of his appearance. I wouldve liked to see him in the cutscenes (cutslides?) in atleast a Legion kilt/skirt to tie him closer to his service with Caesar and just from a nitpicky point of view (as if none of the rest of this post was exactly that) I wish he only wore his bandages to hide his incredibly effing ugly scarred face instead of having it be that he still has to change the bandages years later because the burns are somehow not healed

Things I just didnt like at all: Sneering Imperialist. Had some good potential but it was a double-svck-whammy (eww) because both the skill checks for it in Zion were just awful. General Gobbledygook? Comeon. I felt more like a canned beer swilling neckbeard than, well, a Sneering Imperialist. Beyond that, back in the Mojave Sneering Imperialist is even more useless since it affects so few enemies, unlike the awesome Fight the Power! or Grunt perks. Finally, the "hook" between Zion and the Mojave. In OWB youre kidnapped. In Dead Money (as I understand it) youre sticking your nose where it doesnt belong and you get trapped. In Lonesome Road youre personally called out by Ulysses. In Honest Hearts youre just offered a job in a far away place for not that great pay and you just leave the Mojave? Despite all the important things youve got going on in the storyline? At a minimum I wouldve liked to see an "(Optional): The Legion/NCR has also received the broadcast message from Jed Masterson. Go speak to NPC to see if therere opportunities to be made" at which point Caesar tells you to kill the ever living crap out of The Mormon Mummy and someone from the NCR tells you to help the tribes if only to keep them from falling into Caesars Legion -- or something, anything!

All in all, fairly positive, but what do you think? Care to take a second look at Honest Hearts with me?
