Is there anything that can be done with Launcher auto-detect

You know when you run Oblivion for the first time, in the Launcher program, it tries to detect your GPU but then it says it's unrecognized because it's too new, and defaults to crappy settings? Is there any way to circumvent that? I don't want it intializing crappy settings on my new hardware.

(inb4 "just press the Ultra High preset" - no, apparently pressing this button STILL leaves behind certain settings at the lowest)

Take a hour or two and experiment with the settings. In this day and age, most GPU's can run Oblivion on high, if not, maxed. What are your specs, though?

The default setting detection thing does the same when I install a new driver, but I just revert back to the settings I had it on.

No, there isn't. The presets are actually coded in there based on which hardware is detected.

Most games are like this.

The best thing to do is, as stated, experiment. Start off with the highest settings in the launcher. Save those settings. Go in game and set all the settings to their highest. Exit the game to make sure they save.

Then play the game. If it's smooth, you can then go about customizing things even more.

Edit:

I also fail to see what's wrong with the launcher having a default when you can simply change things manually....

Intel Q9550 @ 2.4 stock
GTX 460

Okay it's not exactly new but I can play Skyrim on Ultra (with shadows at Very High)

I'm just annoyed at how Oblivion always defaults to the lowest settings. I was wondering if there is a hack or something that will make it autodetect correctly and default to Ultra High settings.

(I recall that simply pressing the Ultra High preset is not enough; didn't it also do some stuff like use different shader packagess or something like that. And as I said, pressing this button doesn't exactly set everything properly; for example, shadowmap resolution still stays at its lowest settings in the INI even after pressing this button. Also the Ultra High button doesn't max everything out; I still have to go in-game to max out all the sliders in the graphics menu)

EDIT: highlighted my most important concern in bold
