Fallout 3 crashing when detecing Video card

Post » Tue Jan 01, 2013 4:07 pm

Hi All,
I have a intel i5 (4 core) @ 3.4Hz and a Nvidia GTX 560 Ti graphics card. After installing Fallout 3 the launcher started but crashed when it was attempting to auto config the graphics card. I am running the latest drivers from nVidia. After it crashes and I restart the launcher it allows me to manually configure the card but I then get a Hardware T&L required but not supported by this adapter. Surely the GTX 560 Ti is more than capable???

Any help is appreciated.

Try a driver other than whatever you are using now.

Already tried previous versions of the driver with no luck. I have also tried multiple configurations of compatibility when running the launcher and Fallout 3.

This is obviously a video card driver issue or system instability issue. Bethesda suggests it is specifically a video card driver issue on their support page for FO3. Perhaps posting a complete dxdiag report and RendererInfo.txt results will provide more insight.

The rendererinfo.txt is blank, i have copied one I found on the internet that relates to my graphics card but after I launch the game it still crashes and then the rendererinfo.txt is blank again.
Here is a dump of the dxdiag.

Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 7884MB RAM
Have you run memtest86 lately? The available OS Memory is a bit suspicious as it is less than normal for a system with 8GB RAM. Perhaps there is some configuration you can do in your BIOS to optimize your memory clock and latency, then run the latest version of memtest86 to test it out. This will help to ensure the best performance of the system and check for stability issues. If your system is not stable than your drivers will not function correctly.

Do you happen to have Oblivion and/or Skyrim? Do they detect your card? What are the contents of their RendererInfo.txt files if you have them? If you don't have those games, since they are related to the same family of Gamebryo engines yet different versions, are there any other Gamebryo games that you run just fine?

*EDIT*
Another possibility is an integrated graphics chipset still enabled. You cut off the dxdiag dump early so that can't be ruled out, along with system details not being present in the report.
