The Laser Rifle and its mods

This is taken from another thread and brought here to discuss the applications of the Laser Rifle and the pros and cons of its mods and how they affect damage.

Bonus Question: Do you like the Laser Rifle? Which mod do you use with it? The Focus Optics for +3 damage? The Beam Splitter to increase its DPS at the expense of lower DT penetration? The scope to use it as a pinch sniper rifle? All three? Some other combination? Why or why not?

The animation does not matter, the damage done to your enemy should be the same whether the game is showing you 2 beams of light or 3. Add the Living Anatomy Perk to help see the damage difference between the base and modded laser weapon.

Perhaps Im not being clear. Lets look at the numbers

Base damage, unmodified: 22

The Beam Splitter boosts the damage by 30% but split between two beams.

22 * .30 = 6.6; 22 + 6.6 = 28.6 (total damage of both beams) /2 = 14.3 (damage per beam)

with the bug, the beam is split into 3 instead of 2 which makes our damage per beam = 9.53 repeating

We still get 28.6 damage total if all three hit, but, just like the problem we have with shotguns using shot loads instead of slug loads, it makes the weapon perform poorly against targets with higher DT
