It's one theory. However, the Aldudagga gives us a different origin story (the Leaper Demon King). Which, I guess you could argue that LDK is a stand-in for Magnus, but Shor Son of Shor names the Nordic Magnus as Magnar, so I doubt it.

It's just one of those things that floats around the lore forum and occasionally gets repeated as gospel.
