Beginning of Honest Hearts : Fallout: New Vegas

So, at the beginning of Honest Hearts you arrive at Zion and are immediately ambushed. I reloaded my save about 10 times trying to save at least someone in the caravan party. each time though, no mater where I positioned myself, everyone gets mowed down except for the courier.

Has anyone ever saved one of the caravaners? Is it impossible? If you can, do they stay as a companion throughout the rest of the DLC?

I've gotten it where there is one guard left and I can't get a clear enough shot to save him. Will the White LEgs just keep spawning until the deed is done?
