Anybody tried following the caravan and followers to the lincoln memeorial after you have completed the basic mission requirements ?

I play through on very hard mode always and found this a pretty hard challenge to not suffer any casualties by the time you reach your destination... and that was pre - enclave patrols, i have tried a few times with enclave patrols but a couple of energy weapons hits each and the group is toast... any thoughts?
