longsword vs shortsword

I've personally always used long swords but I'm thinking of using a short sword for my new character. Would anyone consider them a viable choice

Bheul ,ta gaeilge liofa agamsa ceard fut fhein. I just like the aesthetics and theory of short sword I'm just worried about damage output
