Not stupid at all, I haven't beat the MQ either. They do disappear though.

I finished the main quest 3 out of many play throughs. I never seen a gate after finishing the MQ in all 3 times.

Think about it,
Spoiler
you kill the person responsible
for the gates.

does anyone know how many gates there are

60 gates total, I think, BRB with true info.

EDIT: True info: If you have closed 60 Oblivion gates you have closed them all (this includes 50 random gates, 9 standard gates, and the Great Gate).

If you do not do the Main Quest I believe none of the gates appear. Shortly into the MQ the gate at Kvatch appears. Soon, Ten fixed gates appear. Then IIRC as you traipse around Cyrodiil 50 gates will randomly spawn. If you don't do the MQ this will not happen.

However, gates that do spawn will not disappear AFAK. They remain broken hulks.

They do close, even though the base might remain.

I already said how many, your info is not correct unless console command.

If you have closed 60 Oblivion gates you have closed them all (this includes 50 random gates, 9 standard gates, and the Great Gate).

you are incorrect, twice

1. Mehrunes Dagon is the one responsible for the Gates and he is banished by Martin
2. There may be 60 bases for the gates, but some of them respawn/re-open later during the MQ. However if you finish the MQ, they will stay closed forever.

Where and what am I wrong? As for your #1 I said that. NEVER remove a spoiler tag OK. It wasn't your quote or words to remove them.

A message to MODERATORS, false claims are here about 100 gates when there are 60 total. I have seen this question and answer many times and seen 60 gates answer all the time. SOMEONE_reborn claims I am wrong twice, even removed a spoiler tag when the OP didn't finish the MQ and I didn't want to spoiler it. If the OP was curious, OP could have seen it them self not by someone removing it.

sigh...
This is the "cheats, hints and spoilers" section, there's no need for spoiler tags, and if something is quoted, the tags disappear sometimes.
With the gates it's a little bit trickier there are indeed 90 "places" for gates, but only 60 of them will actually spawn in a game. 10 Places are fixed, others randomized.
And if you bother the mods with such trivial [censored], you'll be the one they will be pissed at, if they notice it at all, that is.
Btw., got a bad day or something?

No bad day, read post 9. then my response to it and you saying I am wrong. I don't see how, you still didn't answer my question to where I am wrong twice. THE OP did finish the quest, YOU can't remove spoiler tag. I will tell the moderator what I feel.

Just to be clear, the OP asked and was answered. No more gates after you finish the MQ. You
Spoiler
defeat the person or what ever (Mehrunes Dagon)
is responsible for the gates. I put spoiler tag b/c OP didn't finish the MQ. I don't see why it bothered someone.

There are 60 Oblivion gates total you can close (this includes 50 random gates, 9 standard gates, and the Great Gate).

Info source: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion_Gates
If you have closed 60 Oblivion gates you have closed them all (this includes 50 random gates, 9 standard gates, and the Great Gate). Since no gates reopen (unless you use the console to change the default game settings), no more Oblivion Gates will appear. There are actually a total of 100 fixed locations where gates may open. At 10 locations this will always happen, and for 90 locations this is random. However, no more than 60 gates will open during the course of playing the game. The article on 100% Completion provides tips for players who want to ensure that their accomplishment page states that 60 gates have been closed.

You are wrong again there are more gates i have a map right next to me on a wall and all oblivion gates are marked on it!
That info on wiki is incorrect
But anyways this doesn't matter the whole thing was stupid we all answered to the OP and thats it if anyone starts arguing well you know what will happen :D

Based on the original map, comment at jdwells@storm.ca however i don't think you will get a answer, its for personal use

And i explored to find all of those gates and i found them all!

well, to be precise both of you can be right, albeit this other guy a little less. There are 100 gates, but only 60 of them will open in a game. I mixed it up, thus you are wrong only once, since
Spoiler
Mancar Camoran is only quite indirectly responsible for the gates being opened, but it's still Dagon's work and the gates are dependent on him to stay open

P.S.: you want to tell the mods about removed spoiler tags in the spoilers forum? well, if you want to spam 'em, sure...

Ths got derailed. I think the debate is done.

Read the wiki - there are 90 random spawn points, where random gates might pop up. It does not mean that 90 gates will pop up. When the gates spawn and how frequently is specifically dependant on where you are in the main quest - up to 50 random gates will open during the MQ.

There are a bunch of fixed gates that will always pop up. Kvatch, the cities during the MQ, Sutch, Bruma Great Gate.
