College of Winterhold symbol

This is my first post here, so I'm sorry if this is the incorrect place to ask this.

My question is about the symbol on all of the gates and big windows in the College of Winterhol, the one with the eye and the five points coming out of it in an upside down star shape. I am wondering if this symbol has any meaning or significance noteable to any lore from the series.

I have had this discussion with a few others in the past, but nothing decisive was concluded. Some have speculated that it symbolizes the Eye of Magnus, though I find this hard to believe, seeing as that is not an object always present at the college, nor is it something the college is necessarily based on.

Recently, I have considered that it is possibly a representation of the Daedric prince Hermaeus Mora. The symbol looks a bit like the form he takes, and he is the Prince of knowledge and memory.

If anyone has any input, it would be appreciated.
