normal maps and file extensions

I would like to understand the usage of extension for normal maps. In my texture folder, I have textures for normal map with different extensions:

name_n.dds
name_nm.dds
name_nrm.dds

Strange. Are those extensions all similar, equivalent, or do they apply for different kind of mapping? I could not find any documentation on this.

Next, are normal/bump maps automatically handled by MGE, just adding the proper extension to the map texture (_n, _nm or _nrm), or does the bump map has to be attached manually to a NIF (ie: with Nifskope)? Again, I found both cases: textures having a normal map not present inside the NIF file, and NIF with a reference to a map texture.
