I am getting back into MW after a very long leave of absence. I have never modded MW before, although I have modded Oblivion into...well...Oblivion! I really like Better Cities and OOO for Oblivion since it overhauls all the major cities. is there anything like that for MW? I have seen some single city expansion mods but they don't seem to be complete, like Pelgaid expanded is nearly done on the outside but has no interiors to speak of, or was I looking at an older description? also, I found a compilation mod for Balmora Expanded but it got mixed reviews saying that it added a lot of stuff at the cost of quality. I saw another city expansion mod (can't remember which city) but it was talking about adding a theme park!?! not sure I want a theme park in my desolate RPG...

I have also seen Morrowind Advanced and BigMod but those change a lot of the game play and make the game more difficult which I am not sure I want. However, I don't really know much about them, so, anything you know would be helpful.

(edit)
I am not really looking for quest add ons, but, I am looking for more areas, cities, sight seeing stuff (like Unique Landscapes for Oblivion). house mods are good too since I like to collect stuff and display them in my houses. and if possible I would only want to install a mostly finished product.
(edit)

I already have a ton of graphics upgrades installed as well as MCA (I just have not started a full game with them yet). now that everything looks pretty I would like more stuff to do. I also have Tamriel Rebuilt ready for install, just have not gotten around to it yet. are there any other mods that add stuff to the mainland (since TR is only 2/6 completed?) Lots of opinions please!

There isn't really an OOO-equivalent for Morrowind (BigMod and Adventurers, on PES, come closest) as there hasn't been a pressing need for such a radical overhaul.

http://www.mwmythicmods.com/SettlementExpansions.htm, which I really need to update

http://www.mwmythicmods.com/MAPoMODSbyCyronaut.jpg gives an idea of some of the landmasses out there.

And I'd really recommend Morrowind Advanced

First, since your new to MW mods, check through http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1060141-mod-recommendations-for-new-players/page__p__15392814__fromsearch__1&#entry15392814 to see what Patches and Tools you'll be wanting to install.

Personally, I find Balmora Expanded to be too much, and conflict with too many mods, but it's popular.
Some of my city favourite city expansions:

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5057
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=3375 (adds a new town, but it's true to Lore because there used to be a town there)

The http://www.lgnpc.org/ mods are great for bringing the NPCs to life. And there are a few miscellaneous quests added. Fits perfectly into the game. Highly recommended to grab all the LGNPC mods.

If you want a big mod that add lots of new stuff to do, but not quests, I suggest http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=4077.
A "realism" mod. http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=3027

More landscapes with cities if you're curious, but not part of the mainland (not official Lore)

If you want more to see and do, check out the Tamriel Rebuilt Project maps. Map 1 is technically still in "beta", but is VERY playable as-is; all it really needs at this stage is to have its MQ completed and a number of bugs fixed (only one or two of them at all serious, and there are fixes or workarounds for those). The second map doesn't have any quests yet, but there's still plenty of towns and wilderness to check out and explore. You really have to see them to believe it, they're at least as good as an official expansion.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1033781-starfire-npc-additions/ makes the cities more alive by adding more NPCs to them.

It's comparable to MCA, but it doesn't add any hostile NPCs in cities or dungeons and uses only vanilla clothing, so they blend in with the vanilla NPCs perfectly.

Its not official lore, but it is so well done you wouldn't know it, it is easily one of the most complete and well thought out mods out there, not to mention it provides a nice castle that you can eventually call your own, a partner you can marry, quite a few misc. quests as well as a very fun main quest, its just bustling with stuff to see and do and the landscape is splendid even if a little dated....................anyways, I highly reccomend it. :P

Personally, I tend not to use city improvers. Most altar the landscape and will get in the way of Animated Grass (which I can't be bothered to fix)

I'd stick with More Detailed Places.

I mean, if you can be bothered to fix the issue/play without animated grass, go for it.

One thing, though. They're not needed. You don't want too much to distract you on your first run through. You want to experience the game, and not some mods, first.

Here's my list of suggested mods for a first time play:

  • Better Heads
  • Better Bodies
  • Wakim's Game Improvements
  • Brittlewind Fix
  • Morrowind Code Patch
  • Morrowind Graphics Extender if you can handle it (you should be able to - you have Oblivion)

You may want to try Morrowind Comes Alive and Children of Morrowind, they may take away from the vanilla game for a first timer, but they may add to it. I'm not sure. The ones above are astheic/bug fixes/balancers

Morrowind is a great game, without all these mods, anyway. You'll enjoy yourself even without any of these.

And don't post anything asking for help. You want to be a fresh noob, it's the best part of morrowind, by far. Even if you think you're experienced from Oblivion, there's new concepts for you, that will noob you up. ^_^

Thank you all for the comments. I had a lot of research to do but I think I finally got a decent set of stuff for my morrowind game. I also found a nice house addition to the game that gives lots of display space with mannequins!

Just FYI, this is not my first run through. I did vanilla back in the day when it was first released. I got up to lvl 53(?) I think, but, that was three computers ago. in that game I took over a mansion in Balmora (killed the residents) and just laid out all my gear on the tables. with mannequins I now have some place to show it all off!

anyway, feel free to continue discussing expansion mods as I am certain that there will be others looking for the same information.

I was surprised that Pelagiad was not well modded. I only found 2 Pel expansions and 1 was a WIP. and I was also surprised to see so many Seyda Neen expansions, it was difficult to choose one. I did also get LGNPC, but, was dissapointed to learn that it, too, is still a WIP.

I'll be back later to comment on the mods I choose when I get around to seeing them in game!

BTW, are there any decent "dungeon" expansions out there (more stuff to explore?)

Seyda neen is actually easy to explain. Did you ever go back to it after you got going in game? Most don't. Sure you hit balmora, and just about every other town with some form of transport, but not that one.. seemed odd to most, so it got a good hard look many times. The town is ill represented and for a town that is otherwise well located, it seems off somehow. This coupled with the fact that you start off here, making it easiest to test and use for new and old modders alike, ended up making it the prime modding spot for years till there was a movement to break away from modding it. lol

I too am surprised pel is not better modded, as it is a great little town with a lot of modding potential. I think perhaps it's a daunting task to tackle, because at it's basic level it's already well done, so only a large mod could really touch it, and many of those would tend to not get finished. Even still, that is strange..

As for LGNPC, give it a chance before you become disappointed in it. There is little surprise it is still a WIP, as there was a lot of plot and dialogue to have to rehash and sift through. It may sound simple, but it takes a lot of work, and the crew that works on it often has a lot on their plate. Even from the get go, they had to divide the work up city by city, and it at least got them this far. And despite it's WIP status, I think you'll find it an excellent and well thought out mod.

http://gmml.pbworks.com/Dungeons, bit old (as is Marbred's list), but there's a few :)

I'd suggest Tombs Expanded by Zappara as that just adds new levels to existing tombs.

Return to III - Morrowind
