I'm assuming that because Prophet willing removed the suit it didn't harm him, but still wasn't letting him go as he was basically linked to it. However the other had their suits forcibly removed(skinned) from them by C.E.L.L. which no doubt would take it's toll on them.

Another thought could by that you see Prophet had a sort of Undersuit which allowed him to remove the Nanosuit 2 much easier than say the Nanosuit 1, which is what the others had.

The guys could remove the suit willingly, but the physical and psychological trauma from trying to rip the suits forcefully from them killed most of them

Just like FireKnight31 says it seems suits can be removed when operator want it to be removed.

Nope. Nanosuit 2 is a different suit from the first game's Nanosuit 1.

Seeing as the suit is basically stolen Ceph tech I'd imagine some kind of telepathic link to it's host.
