[WIPz] End of Days

Post » Tue Mar 30, 2010 3:41 pm

Do you remember The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask? How every dawn was another chance to do it right, and how you always feared the end of days would come too soon?

This mod is a little nostalgic wink to that game. It emulates that hyper-dramatic "Bell Toll" sequence when the clock strikes 6:00 a.m.

As the Dawn nears, your screen will diminish and the Clock Town bell will toll. Just make sure you're somewhere safe when the clock strikes six...

A little mod I made for fun, and to satisfy my constant intense need to play this game. (I don't have my copy back... Got it back -- yes!) I've been trying to figure out how to do a lot of stuff with MGE and scripting, and I figured this would be as good as any other mod to try. :hehe: If I ever find more time, I want to try to add a few things in, like a day counter or some of those ever-helpful sayings like older Call of Duty games had.

I wish MGE had some function to write text onto the screen in some font. It would make things so much easier for a lot of mods. I looked at the custom HUD functions, but they're difficult to understand. Oh well, if I have time...

Well, I thought this might put a little of that rosy red goodness into somebody's day, so without further ado:

I've added a video preview if you would like to see the mod in action. It's in the description on the PES page.

New version is up. I feel pretty stupid right now, I forgot to include an entire folder in the first release zip. But this one will be better!

New stuff:
+ Added a day counter. The DAWN screen will now say "DAWN OF THE XXX DAY" with XXX being whatever day it is since you started playing.
+ Added an actual time pause. Time will stop for a moment while the DAWN screen is active, just like in Majora's Mask. No gratuitous ZA WARUDO jokes, sorry. I did this by playing a video right after the shaders go up, which means that if your framerate is very low (less than 30 fps) the DAWN screen will last a little bit longer than intended, but this will not disrupt the script's timing.
+ Silly me, the previous version's bell only chimed five times; it now chimes six times like it should.

The whole thing is a bit messy, since I have no idea how to do one thing I want to do. vtastek, if you're reading this, this is a formal request! I basically copied a single shader about thirty times and gave it a different name for each number, and I'd really like a single shader that can do it better. I need something that can overlay four, maybe five, textures over the screen at once. That way I can just set the four textures from the script instead of sifting through thirty individual shaders to pick the three I need. If you will do this, thank you.

Interesting idea, but I wish it had a point.. in the zelda game it could lead to game over, but in MW all it does is restrict for a little bit. <_<

If you could come up with some way that it matters, then I would consider a dl, but as is, there wouldn't be much of a reason to have it in my load order. I'm not saying it has to have a game ending clause but it needs something more. maybe monsters or something? I dunno.

I know the perfect use for this in some final form. Under the day counter, mention what that night's moon phase is, combine it with a mod that makes it so that werewolves only change on the full moon and....

Yeah, it's mostly for novelty at the moment. It'd be fun to add a little danger or mystery to the deal. Maybe a random affliction for the day if you were not somewhere "safe?" I'm open to any ideas.

Great idea! I'll see how I can do this.

Neo, if you're out there, I could use some help...

I've never summoned before. (Maybe I have.) It would be cool to have 5+ textures via one shader. There is a limitation, I think 5 files per shader. I'm working on texture atlas method to make this possible. I combined your files into one 512*64 file. I placed them in 50 pixels wide offsets so I can call them in shader from their offset. You can send the offset multiplier and it will display the right number. Or maybe another system, I am studying it.
