Custom Window Size - How do I set this up?

Post » Fri Mar 01, 2013 7:04 am

I have the Steam version of Morrwind, and I'm using MGE XE in the game. My monitor is a 23" widescreen with native resolution of 1920 x 1080. When I play the game in full screen mode, I get lots of horizontal stretching of NPCs and all other objects in the game world that I just can't stand to look at, so I play in windowed mode to get the correct aspect ratio. The Steam version of the game forces me to always launch it through the game launcher, which doesn't allow me to use MGE XE's custom window size feature. Unfortunately, the game launcher only has two options at the largest settings; 1280 x 960 (my current setting), which means I have room to grow my window, and 1600 x 1200, which I can't use because that cuts off the bottom of the window so I can't see the mini-map, selected weapons/spells, or my health, magicka and fatigue bars.

Is there any way I can work around this? I'd like to set the window size at something like 1440 x 1080, which will allow the window to fill my screen as much as possible. So I either need a way to bypass the game launcher so I can launch through MGE XE, or I need a way to edit this setting directly. I checked the Morrowind.ini file but didn't see anything relating to screen resolution settings there. Is this set in the Windows registry? I tried asking this in the MGE XE thread some time back, but no one ever answered my question.

Thanks!

I don't have Morrowind on Steam, but I use the default Launcher to play and all MGE features work flawlessly. After you set desired resolution in MGE, just launch the game and select Play, no need to select resolution again, MGE already did it.
But, if it still doesn't work... did you run Morrowind at least once before installing MGE? You need to do so, so that the game sets some things in Windows Registry, and resolution is one of those things.

Does the FPS Optimizer work with MGE XE? That allows you to set whatever resolution you want. Barring that, these values can be changed in the INI file. I think you would want to set it to read only after making the change so the launcher does not change it for you. But, try it first without setting that flag.

Plus the INI file is not fully generated until Morrowind is ran once, so there is nothing to edit....

I can't be 100% sure I ran Morrowind before installing MGE (it's been several months since I installed them) but I'm going to say that I did. I always make sure any vanilla game is running properly before I start installing mods.

I just tried setting a screen resolution of 1440 x 1080 in MGE again - it didn't have any effect on the window size when I launched the game - still at 1280 x 960. The MGE message appears on the intro screen when I launch, so I'm assuming it's running properly. Even launching the game from the Morrowind.exe file takes me through the launcher.
