can only save game progress while signed into XBL...wtf?

I've had Crysis2 for the Xbox360 for a couple of years. I didn't download it, it's a boxed edition. I got it from Amazon. I've played it offline for most of that time, because up until very recently I've never had an Xbox Live membership. However, I've since decided to get an XboxLive Gold membership, just to see what it's like. When I inserted the Crysis2 DVD it prompted me to download an update for the game. So I let it. But ever since that update, Crysis2 will no longer save game progress unless I am signed into XBL! It gives me a message saying "Do you want to sign in? If you don't, you won't be able to save progress". It functioned perfectly fine offline before this stupid update. What if I choose to cancel my XBL membership? This game will be utterly useless to me, all because of one stupid little update! If I choose to not sign in, the game reverts back to factory settings and asks me to configure screen brightness, etc. Resuming the campaign no longer works. Only by signing in to my XBL account does it let me resume the game from the last checkpoint, which I never needed to do before this update. If I can't save progress there's very little point in me playing the game; I'm not a masochist.

Since I am using a boxed version of the game, usage restrictions - as mentioned in a previous post - do not apply here, do they? I just want to know if there is any way to uninstall this update apart from deleting the entire game from my 360.
