Problem with Vulpes Inculta in Nipton and Legion assasins

I had to abandon my last playthrough, because I got harassed with unbalanced, overpowered Legion assasins, after I killed Vulpes Inculta & his soliders in Nipton AND assisted a NCR patrol in a skirmish with some Legion soldiers. Unfortunately I was careless with savegames, and did not keep a pre-nipton savegame, cause I didn't expect any problems of that kind.

Some people claim the Legion assasins are easy or moderately difficult to manage, but that was definitively NOT my experience. I was constantly attacked with overpowered, bullet-resistant assasins. I wonder if the game designers actually bothered to TEST the power balance issues.

Anyway, now I'm doing a new playthrough, with more care dedicated to saving the game, but I still don't know what to do in Nipton.

I'd really like to kill Vuples Inculta, out of emotional and role-playing reasons. But I really do not want to experience the overpowered assasins problem again.

What are my options?

Do these guys stop comming after I kill a certain amount of their groups? Or are they spawned infinitively?

How effective are faction disguises? Can I simply wear a faction disguise and run to Vegas, where a Legion emissary will reset my reputation with the Legion?

Or should I simply let go and let Vulpes Inculta live (I understand I will have the opportunity to kill him later)?

BTW I find it shameful that the issue has not been patched and that it was actually introduced by a patch.

What's your difficuly setting? Besides the legion assasins don't need to be patched, if someone kills your buddies you'd send guys after em right? And yes, faction reputations reset once you get the platinum chip.

sort of

once you get the Chip, you will receive the Mark of Caesar after leaving the Tops which will prevent the Legion from attacking you. This boon will end though if you incur more negative rep with the Legion after this point or if you advance one of the non-Legion quest lines beyond a certain point and the assassination attempts will resume

such is the price to be paid for crossing the Legion
