Dawnguard - Serena & chasing echoes quest

I've tried everything from waiting 3 days, trying to hire/dismis a new follower even to trying to kill my "wife" .... all of which don't work as the latter is unkillable. What on earth do i do? I'm playing on a PS3 console BTW.
