whats the point to destruction?

Post » Mon Mar 11, 2013 1:04 pm

the title is kind of a rhetorical question. i mean i have thought about doing a character that uses destruction lately but it just seems overpowered and a little too boring (become of being OP) like i have watched friends go on master with a destruction mage and breezed through the game easily. i guess the fact you are blowing [censored] up and reigning havoc would be pretty fun but i just think for me it would be boring just point and shoot and killing things way too easily. i have not tried destruction to its full extent so im not hating on it im more unsold on using it. im aware i properly shouldn't know it till i try it but i don't really have much motivation too so is anyone else like me or is destruction a lot better and challenging i give it credit for???

The same could be said for any weapon, or playstyle. What's the point of swords, I mean, you're just hacking away? Or, what's the point of archery, it's just point, and release.

If you don't like destruction, or don't see the merit of using it, don't use it.

If you tool your gear in order to reduce spell cost to levels so low it's silly, then yeah, destruction is overpowered.
Otherwise, it's fine, if maybe lacking variety.

I'd say the point of destruction is to have a school of magic that deals with damaging your enemies directly, instead of doing it through summons and frenzied/controlled allies. Seems like a useful thing to have in a game where mages are fairly commonplace.

In my mind, destruction is hardly OP. In fact, it is highly underpowered! I have to constantly rely on my Dremora's to help me with battle as firebolt and fireball are far too weak alone. Exhibit A: I used fireball on a Falmer Gloomlurker earlier today, and it barely scratched him. I then proceeded to conjure two Dremoras (because I am mainly a summoner, but I am trying to level my destruciton) who made short work of the Falmer. Exhibit B: took me and J'zargo about 5 minutes to fight two Dawnguards, and we were both using destruction spells! Exhibit C: while exploring Nchaund-Zel (or whatever the Dwemer ruin under Markarth is called) and there was this nice place for a battle: a nice fairly open area with a set of stairs going leading to a narrow hallway to the right. I used wall of fire to check the advance of the Falmer, and it still barely scratched even the generic Falmer (which are less powerful and have less HP).

To sum up, my experiences have showed me that destruction magic is extremely underpowered. I would like to note that my destruction is at level 72, so it's not like I am just not powerful enough.
