Low Framerate in Specific Places Resolved Stutter ReducerTwe

Post » Wed Mar 13, 2013 11:39 am

Specs: i5 3570k, MSi GTX 670 Power Edition, 8 gb RAM, Resolution 1440x900

Hello, I'm having quite an annoying issue with my game, in specific places, my framerate will drop by significant amounts for seemingly no reason. The only thing that seems related is that it's almost always around NPC's. My computer is certainly capable of handling this game with every graphics mod imaginable, but this happens anyway. It doesn't seem to matter what settings I use, I've tried with everything tweaked optimally, and it still happens. I don't think it is mods, as I've reinstalled my game and removed almost every mod. I reinstalled the game, set it to Ultra, and haven't tweaked anything else.

I also have an issue where my game gets 'dusty' a few feet in front of me, so it looks like things are loading in 10 feet ahead of me as I walk. I'm uploading a video as I'm typing this, so I'll edit when it's finished. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uLOn8kyrFo

An example of the framerate problem: http://imgur.com/jvwwhQn. In this location I'm getting 45 fps, but if I move forward a few feet or look in a different direction, it goes away.

I've tried: reinstalling drivers, going through mods one by one, reinstalling the game, tweaking multithreading and memory settings.

my framerate will drop by significant amounts for seemingly no reason. The only thing that seems related is that it's almost always around NPC's.

This is normal. As scripts are loaded, the game will do this. Windowed mode can help with this and the stutter remover, which clamps frame rates at a smooth playable level, makes the drops unnoticeable. Also, make sure your gamepad and rumble are disabled, unless you use them. (more of an issue in Fallout 3)

Thanks for responding so quickly, I'm surprised people still post on a 2 and a half year old game's tech support forum. I think you're talking about microstutter, which I don't have an issue with. I've tried the stutter remove, 4gb patch and fake fullscreen. I'm losing upwards of 20 frames, and that's with no action or anything. It's obviously not my computer, on a seperate forum, I've had people tell me that they have the same specs as me, and this never happens. I'm kind of worried it's my savegame, since reinstalling didn't do anything.

Look in your Prefs file, search for Rumble and set that to 0

That is something that causes stuttering.

It was already set to off. My issue isn't stuttering, it's framerate drops. In http://imgur.com/VDLRPSi, I'm at 45 fps, if I look a few inches to the left, it shoots back up to 60.

There are places where i've had fps drops. In one of the vaults I think it was vault 16.
You might try a new saved game with 0 mods loaded. Just don't overwrite any of your other saves. Use the console to add godmode, money, or whatever else you need to get to an area that drops the fps.
TGM is toggle godmode.

Are you doing any driver level settings? Like going into nvidia control panel and adding any specific settings for fallout new vegas?

I'll start a new game and do a rush to the Strip where I know where to find some framey areas. The only non-default driver settings I changed were "Multi-Display/Mixed-GPU acceleration", which I changed to Single Display Performance Mode, and I turned Triple Buffering on

The other way to look at this, if your frame rates are only dropping to 45, then you don't really have anything to worry about. People have complained before about these frame rates dropping into the teens or single digits. That's jarring in the game.

Yes, but I have an expensive computer, and am sensitive to frame drops. I can feel it dropping if it goes below 58.

I made a new game, leveled up to 50, turned on god mode and ran to the strip past quarry junction, spamming Merc's Grenade Rifle the entire way. Never dropped below 59. Once I got to the Strip, however, Standing here: http://imgur.com/PhgYUOr drops me to ~50. I can actually watch my framerate raise and drop frame by frame as I strafe on this wall. This isn't the only place by the way, it's just the only one I remember at the moment. Going to try disabling all the NPC's to see if that changes anything.

Disabled every NPC except Victor, who you can't disable, and typed killall. No noticeable difference standing in the same place as previous image.

One thing worth mentioning is when a high poly count is displayed on screen the game will drop fps as the CPU has to render more triangles (meshes), also as you mentioned NPCs will drop the rate but you tried killall and that didn't help.

Perhaps your PC is experiencing a bottleneck somewhere but consider a few other things: If you have ugridstoload set above 5-7 in the INI your FPS will take a hit in a high poly area (an area with a lot of of content) as more cells are loaded, also consider the cell buffers and object/npc fades, if set to highest you will, again, experience the drop. I agree that it's not a script problem, unless of course you have a really buggy script running.

As CCNA mentioned, a drop of 15 fps is not so bad, but it can be very annoying with the sudden drop. So I understand you completely. I'm running a 3960x OCed to 4.5ghz and 2 ASUS 7970 DCU2T's with 2400Mhz RAM and a LO of 150 mods, I mainly get 50-60fps but again i'll get more of a hit in an intense area.

The game is very fickle with it's settings, different users have different settings to make the game run smoothly. Many of us have to experiment until we reach a satisfactory level of performance.

My recommendation for you is to 1. Download the NV Configator and play with some settings (don't decrease the value of ugridstoload with a current save game, it will crash it, it's fine if you increase it though), 2. Back up your old save and try a new game, again play with the settings, 3. Check your active processes on the PC and get rid of whatever you can safely, and 4. Find and change this setting in the INI: LandLOfadetime and set to HALF of your timescale, by default it is 15, if your timescale is set to 10 or so than go half, this setting seems to have a lot of impact on the dusty, unloaded landscape your getting, also it suggests that your RAM and HDD aren't loading the landscape fast enough for the CPU and GPU to quickly process, again suggesting a bottleneck or a slow piece of hardware.

EDIT: Additional info: Always set ugridstoload to an odd number, like 5-7-9, i'd say 9 is too much for you, leave at 5 and play with it later. In NV Configator look for the setting Land Quality and set it from 1.5 (maximum default) to 3.0 - do this by manually entering 3.0 in the number field and then clicking apply, this should help with the landscape not loading in front of you also (you'll never fully get rid of it though, it's a big problem), when trying a new game do so without the race mod, then add it in later and see if you get a performance hit (just for fun sake lol, always good to test these things), and also try disabling AA and Anistropic filtering in game and use CCC or Nvidia Control to override the settings globally (I see a big improvement in quality and consistent FPS with CCC turned up and in game setting turned down.)
And one more suggestion, find and download Game Companion for fake fullscreen mode - it will auto detect FNV4gb and run the game in a fake fullscreen, just be sure to disable Fullscreen and Vsync in game so it works. This gives a great general boost to performance at no cost to visuals ^.^. Be sure you don't use FalloutLauncher to change your settings - EVER - it will reset your INI files to that of FalloutDefault.ini in the game directory. Use configator to do that.

So many factors, so much stuffing around.... It's a love hate relationship that's for sure XD

Not going to quote that for obvious reasons, but thanks for the reply! I've tried the Fake Fullscreen mod, and it seemed to lower my framerate, but I've never tried it with Vsync off. I'm running a default uGrids because I don't really notice a major difference besides framerate. I was actually thinking about disabling the in-game AA and using CSAA as it's more performance friendly. I actually use NVConfigator on my normal install (I reinstalled because of this issue), I set all the threading options to on, increase my memory settings, raise my havok threads to 4. I also top off all the LOD settings in it and increase the land quality, but I still notice things popping in suddenly, like there's no LOD for it. I don't even use many graphics mods, just NMC Lite, Fellout, NVR2, both of the LOD enhancing mods. I have a WD Blue HDD I believe, haven't looked at it in quite a long time, so that might be part of the issue. Would buying an SSD for games help performance? My RAM is 1600mhz, so I don't think that's an issue. Thanks for all the information. Also, when I turn Vsync off when playing in fullscreen, I get crazy stuttering, again, haven't tried it with Fake Fullscreen yet. One other thing, what framerate should I set my Stutter Remover to? It seems like with my rig I should be able to play with an ENB, 9 ugrids, ultra textures and all the toppings, but I guess Gamebryo is a fickle beast. Do you have any recommended tweaks to the memory/multithreading? Should I just turn them all on? One last thing, I promise, I'm under the impression I've got my processes pretty minimized already: http://imgur.com/LDJVXhe

Okay well one thing, as you mentioned, your running off a normal HDD, I cannot recommend to you enough to get an SSD, I'm running 2 Intel 520 SSD's and OMG, they are the best part of my PC, they out perform my WD 2TB SATA3 5 to 1 (500MBs a sec ^^)

Yeah that landscape not loading is always a big problem, it's like the game doesn't prioritize the load of the landscape texture, but then again, the larger the texture the more work for the HDD, RAM and GPU (in that order too) so yeah another fatal flaw, I found you can only make it slightly better but never fix it :/.

Try setting your fade settings to 10 rather than 15 and set DistantFade or whatever it is from 50000 down to 35000 and see what that does for the landscape.

BTW FF will suffer with Vsync on in game, it's only for Fullscreen really, to prevent tearing at high frames, it is costly in itself, leave your GPU control panel to deal with it, it's much more efficient :).

Thanks man
I also edited my post with about a million more questions

Alright, changed stuff around in Configator, http://imgur.com/ztsFAN5. In the first image, HD preload size is cut off, I changed it to 100mb.

Ran the game with all of Ssmb_92's suggestions, seems to have fixed my issue. Going to reinstall my mods and test some more

Sorry it took so long to respond, I was busy today. I tried with all my mods, and it runs pretty well. Still have frame drops, but they feel less framey. I don't know how this is possible, but I'm getting screen tearing in fake fullscreen mode.

Make sure that you have Vsync set in your GPU panel and if you can enable triple buffering. Double check you have Vsync and Fullscreen turned off in configator, sometimes they don't apply properly.

Vsync is set to use the game's setting, which is off. Triple buffering is set to off. I read it was because I don't have Windows Aero enabled, going to go test that out.
EDIT: Yep. that fixed it. Thanks for all the help, SsmB_92

EDIT 2: Last one, I promise. What FPS cap should I set the stutter remover to?

OK, this is where you get the answer you won't like. I know you want this game to scream along at high frame rates, but that is what causes you to really notice when the rates drop. As I have said before, this game is not a shooter, so high frame rates are not needed to be successful in battles. IE, 60 FPS is good in a shooter, 30 FPS is good enough in an RPG.

So, you have to cap the game at a value that makes the drops less noticeable. The stutter reducer's stock setting is 37. You can try 40 or 45, but that might make the drops noticeable again. I have mine set to 37 and I never see a frame rate drop, and the game is smooth as buttah. I have set it higher than this, I did not notice any improvement in the game's feel, but I did notice the drops more, but they were still not as bad as not using the stutter reducer.

Also, I don't know if you have done this, but make sure you disable the rumble and the game pad for smoothest play, unless you use that controller. You can do this in the Prefs and INI files. Look for pad and rumble and set those lines to be off.
