A giant problem (or, creature vs. creature combat AI)

I'm having a problem with my Aela follower mod involving werewolf-giant combat. Basically, in human form, Aela will fight toe-to-toe with a giant. In werewolf form, however, as soon as the giant lands a blow, she runs away--even though her "confidence" actor value is set to 4 ("foolhardy," which suposedly means she should never flee).

I'm guessing that when two actors with racial keyword ActorTypeCreature meet, normal combat behavior actor values must be ignored in favor of some other calculation mechanism--but can anyone verify this? And if so, does anyone know what this calculated mechanism is? It doesn't seem to be level, as bumping her level up to 81, in comparison to the giant's 32, didn't change her behavior. Damage is a possibility, as that would make sense of how she only runs after being hit once....
