SMAA - General Questions

Post » Sun Mar 17, 2013 8:54 pm

I have only just learned of this option for Skyrim.

My question is, what is the preferred way to apply this in the game? The STEP project offers a link, and then there are some files on the Nexus that revolve around the SweetFX mod. I'm basically wondering if there is a focal point on the web somewhere, and beyond those options where there is a more recent version?

Also, when using SMAA do you set Skyrim's AA to off?

And of course if there's any other thoughts anyone might have I would be very interested to read them. Brand new to this and it looks fascinating.

Thanks.

Turn off Skyrim's AA, install the .dll file, and it automatically starts up when you start the game. That's the gist of it. You can turn it on/off with the pause/break key and see the difference.

SMAA is the best overall form of Anti-aliasing in the performance/effect spectrum. it works just about as well as multi-sampling AA, but it also applies to transparent textures (there's more, I just don't remember it all off-hand). So, all the aliasing you see on vegetation will be reduced. Super-sampling AA is better, but, it's performance impact is pretty massive.

Just keep in mind that you won't be able to use it with mods that use a .dll injector. Like ENB's or RCRN. Though, last I herd, RCRN is integrating SMAA as an option to it's next major update.. Sometime in the future.

ENB has it's own EdgeAA now too in more recent versions. I honestly prefer it over SMAA now.
