I just noticed something while playing that I didn't notice before, and I'm probably really late on this. But when you open the menu with Esc or open your journal with J the game plays a book opening sound. Do you think at some stage during development they maybe had an animation of a book opening, and when they changed the UI to what it is now they didn't bother changing the sound?

Probably. Maybe they changed to something easier due to time contraints.

Well a journal is a book, no? But perhaps they had a more journaly journal before. I doubt it.
