Since they are allegedly ejected from the Red Mountain and bring 'life' to ash guardians and even other creatures, their existence leads to an inevitable question:

Are these heart stone deposits simply the scattered fragments of the Heart of Lorkhan?

If Yes, it means the lore needs to be interpreted a little differently than the end of TES3 suggests: the Heart of Lorkhan was not sent back to Aetherius, but was actually destroyed.
