How do silver weapons work?

Post » Sun Mar 24, 2013 5:02 am

Are undead allergic to silver?

And does it do 20 extra damage per hit or does it have its base damage increased by 20 against undead? The latter would make it muuuuuuuuuuuch more powerful when you consider a legendary daedric sword has an effective base damage of 25.

That's the same thing.

20 extra damage per hit against undead.

...and Werewolves.

Twenty extra damage per hit to undead and lycanthropes.

Silver is treated as holy in a lot of pop culture, hence the extra damage.

All of the above.

Sad fact: they can't be improved. :(

Maybe in patch 1.10...

Sorry but if they weren't different I wouldn't be asking. If damage is simply boosted by 20 against undead it's as if there is a 20 points damage enchantment like a fire enchantment on the weapon. If however the base damage is increased by 20 against undead, this base damage increase would be further increased by a higher weapon skill and fortify weapon enchants, just like any other weapon's damage. I was hoping people would be knowledgeable about this.

I ask because if it's the first case then silver weapons are a bit of a joke overall and are useless beyond lv10. If the base damage is increased, it means that silver weapons are absolutely second to none when used against undead/werewolves. I've seen the effect reported as either the first way or the second way so I'm looking for clarification / any testing offers.

Sorry for offending your sensibilities - I meant to be quite polite about it, Se?or Cinco. Your post was highly informative and you were only trying to help so I should have used less harsh language..

I was rather dissapointed when I found a silver sword and realized it couldn't be improved. It looks sweet, I remember liking this weapon quite a lot in Oblivion

According to the USEP silver weapons add +20 base damage and is not improved by weapon skill, but is increased by relevant enchantments and perks.

Excellent thank you, do you have a link? That makes them incredibly powerful options then.

dude, it would be patch 2.0 not 1.10

1.10 would be patch 1.1

We are on patch 1.9 right?

Well, the current patch that we console players are waiting for is 1.9, pc players already have that.

1.9 = 1.90

the next patch would be 2.0 not 1.10

This is off topic, bit it would be 1.10. That's the way patches are listed. It could continue to 1.11 - 1.35, for example.

Had I known that I would not have made note of that thanks for the correction.

As for a weapon dealing its base damage plus twenty extra damage that would kinda be the same as a weapon dealing its base damage plus twenty extra base damage.

the base damage plus the twenty extra damage is still base damage plus twenty extra damage if you think about it. Even if the base damage increased that would still be the base damage plus twenty extra damage.

The OP had a legit Q, and it does make a difference. By being added to the base damage that 20 can actually be increased by Enchantments. Like Gauntlets that Fortify 1H. and potions.

However, that extra 20 damage is not affected by the skill level.

No like I mentioned above it's very different - 20 extra damage is like a 20 damage fire enchantment, this extra damage won't get any stronger if you have 5/5 armsman or +160% fortify one-handed enchantments, only the 8 base damage will. If however it is 20 extra base damage it means that the weapon will have 28 base damage against undead instead of the normal 8 base damage - to put it into perspective that is the equivalent of an unsmithed Dragonbone Warhammer with equivalent perks, or in other words it is roughly (not exactly since apparently increased weapon skill doesn't affect the extra damage) as if the silver sword turns into a 3rd rank Legendary Dragonbone Sword against undead foes. Does that show how much potential it can have? It can even still be enchanted just like normal too. For players that don't rely solely on smithing Silver weapons fill a very unique and powerful niche if they get +20 base damage vs undead/werewolves etc.
