I just read this in a loading screen,and I didn't understood...

What happened? Why is the College feared? Is it because of that damned Thalmor named Ancano?

Look at Winterhold. What do you see? A destroyed city. Its citizens think it is because of the college that a tsunami some years back swallowed much of Winterhold. But the mages don't agree. I'm still confused on who holds the truth.

Because of the great collapse, Nords and wizards were never best buddies anyways.

Its a shame too, the jarl of winterhold could use the college to rebuild his hold.

I don't think the college is that powerful. i mean we saw them in Skyrim didn't we? they were a joke. even Neloth admits it.

I guess mostly because they're simply...mages: Unnatural, egotistical and eccentric. They daily activities are raiding nordic tombs and excavate a giant blue bomb that threatened to blow up a town, and otherwise knocking down ancient dragon temples and unleash unfathomable evil.

Their typical topics of research are: immortality, infinite power, controlling the dead, turning people into animals, invisibility for talos-knows-what... etc. Also they're made up of mostly not-Nord. Pretty repulsive for the simple mead-chugging sword-swinging Nords.

That's why I think the Great Collapse simply was the College having a bad day, or some wizard initiate the event on a whim because he was just crazy.
