Usually, you'll get a letter from the Jarl of Falkreath expressing interest in your ability. I believe he'll send you on a "kill the bandit leader at..." quest and then grant you the title of Thane. Dawnstar, I believe, requires completing the Waking NIghtmare quest. I'm not sure about the Windstadt house as I've never completed that one. Not even sure I attempted to complete it.

Building is a fantastic way to increase your smithing.

does it even matter where i build my house ??

is only falkreath or dawnstar to choose from ?
