I think the problem is not with games actually, but with public. Many spheres of mass media suffer from piracy, which indicates that the old model is outdated. People do not want to purchase something, the are not sure, they'll enjoy.
Gaming companies politics does not help. They became frightened to do anything new, to risk stuff. They became caged in franchises and gaming cliches. The public grows tired of the same stuff.
Some people try to think out of the box, but it is not often successful. I will speak now strictly in opinions. My opinion that Ubisoft, for example, with their AC franchise took a very weak story approach last two games. These stories are filled with cruel and mean event without a certain purpose just to say:"Sh*T happens! Deal with it". They approach gray morality from unpleasant angle and that's why I will not buy them anymore. Watching youtube walkthrough is enough for me. I don't need to experience slightly improved gameplay, since I can always open my ACII or ACB disks and have actual fun there.
The same problem goes with latest bioshock. After watching the ending I was unsatisfied and now I will not buy the game. The same goes with Mass Effect, Dead Space 3 and many, many others. Seriously, when I watched Dead Space ending I was like:" Lol. are we still shooting tentacles in 2013 to get to the next room filled with enemies and new tentacles".
I always check out the story before playing the game. This allows me to judge the story first, and then judge the actual gameplay too without them influencing each other. I can safely tell, that many gaming concepts outstayed their welcome. People do not research new ways to keep players on a path, or in a single place for a certain amount of time. They use the same trick:"Kill all enemies, pass through the door". The public is fed up well with this stuff.
Innovation is scarce. That's why I own Portal 2 or Dishonored. These game has not only nice art direction, but actual meaningful gameplay.
