Of Orcs and Men: An Orsimer discussion

Post » Thu Mar 28, 2013 7:08 pm

This is a thread about Orcs of course.

I haven't played the previous ES games so I don't know much about their lore.

Rather than read a boring wiki, why don't we have an exciting discussion about them.

What's Orsinium like?

How did they get to start worshipping Relicath Malicath?

What's their culture like?

From what I understand, they are a cursed race of elves. How did this come to happen?

What do you like about Orcs?

Berserker Rage + Dual Wield = Level 1 [censored] Train

Well, the Orcs were transformed when Boethiah 'ate' the Elven god Trinimac. Trinimac then transformed into Malacath, and the orcs with him, apparently.

This. As far as from a playstyle stand point they do really well in melee and look the part. As with all the other races though it doesn't matter. Orcs do well with any class. Wasn't Sload an Orc? Or was that an Argonian? O.o IDR

The Sload are a race, from Thras, an archipelago southwest of Tamriel. (The islands had been sunk, but the Sload brought them back up)

N'Gasta, the necromancer, was a Sload.

I would've liked the skin tone slider to range from Light Green to Black.

I'd really enjoy playing a pitch black or dark brown Orc.

What I like about the orcs is their strength, their devotion to the concept of "what does not kill us makes us stronger" (I guess that means Nietzche was an orc ;-) ), and their fundamental sense of virtue. They are very similar to the Nords in most respects. THe one thing I don't like about them - and it's a MAJOR thing - is that Malacath imposes too many restrictions on their society. It is overly concerned with fighting and enduring failure. This is why the orcs never created an empire like the one the Nords have. The Nords, though clearly very uncomfortable with magic, are more dynamic and flexible than the Orcs and thus embrace knowledge, literature and new things in a way that the Orcs do not. There is a potentially very bright future for the Orcs, but they need to build a more dynamic culture. Malacath would do well to encourage his people to become masters not only of fighting and smithing, but of alchemy and magic as well. They're ELVES, after all, and thus have the potential to do wondrous things.

I do think there were lots of darker-skinned orcs in Oblivion.

The first Orsinium had not only orcs but it also had some goblins, ogres and trolls inside it's walls. As it is said on load screen Orsinium has been sacked and rebuilt many times after that. In the two first TES orcs weren't playable but they were enemies instead of that. The happenings of Daggerfall are affecting so that the Orsinium will be noticed as a lesser kingdom and because of that in Morrowind they are one of the playable races.

What I like about the orcs is I despised them in the previous titles. Those pig-faced ugly bastards who's only difference to humans was ugly face and green skin. But when Skyrim made them to look better and gave better view in them and their culture I started to like about them. There is some brutal but beautiful klingon-like culture among them which never opened to me with Morrowind and Oblivion.

I think one of the benefits of setting the next Elder Scrolls game in High Rock is seeing the Breton kingdoms and Orsimer, and the conflict between them.

(That and I prefer to play as Bretons )
