The problem with 3rd person in TES

Post » Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:58 am

Is that it goes with the shooter style 3rd person rather than the tradition 3rd person. So for instance when you run backwards in skyrim, your character will literally run backwards rather than turning around to face the camera and then run. Think splinter cell chaos theory for what I mean, this kind of 3rd person is perfect, the gears of war style, which skyrim went with is clunky and cumbersome. They should have gone with the former imo.

Also, they should have given the player the option of having the camera behind the back, or over the shoulder, as not all of us are fans of the over the shoulder view.

There is also the issue of why the camera decides to pan out when we draw a weapon in 3rd person. This is just another instance of the game assuming on the players behalf, rather than trusting their own judgement when they set the cam distance. I am quite competent that I can decide for myself where I want the camera to be.

Following your trend of petty complaints, I came in here expecting ridiculous points. But...

Well done. A good argument. To an extent. I agree that some of what you mentioned are somewhat annoying, but hardly worth fixing or anything, in my opinion.

If I saw this introduced in a patch, I would be pleasantly surprised. I don't understand the second one though.

Running backwards is more than possible in real life. Skyrim's the first TES game to reduce backwards running speed in comparison to forwards running speed (quite rightly), which means it's less of a "cheat" and more tactical now.

Why shouldn't we be able to run backwards and fire spells at an enemy?

The problem with the Third Person Perspective in Skyrim is that the First Person Perspective needs a lot more attention.

It'd be pretty cool if you were able to do both. I can do that IRL, so why not in Skyrim?

That doesn't make sense. The problem is actually that they could both use a little bit of work. I don't think it's enough to warrant it's own patch, but if I saw it in a future patch, I wouldn't complain.

I can stand the over the shoulder view, I think it makes for better cinematic looking views of stuff. However I don't like that I can't switch shoulders to view over or do a straight back overhead view.

I rather like the 3rd person view. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Why don't you just turn around and run forwards if you're that keen? If it was implemented that holding backwards make the character face the camera and run towards it, people would rightfully complain that there is no way to move backwards while attacking or casting spells. It would mean that when you're fighting someone in close quarters you can move back out of the way while keeping your shield up. The current implementation actually lets you do that. I just don't get this request.

This annoys me to no end. I could SOMEWHAT understand if it went to the side when drawing weapons, like a bow as then the to the side camera would actually be vaguely useful. Instead we get the opposite though. Its actually one of the things I find most annoying as its a constant thing thats always there every second I play (disregarding the few times I go 1st person).

Yeah, I keep zooming in when drawing weapons and then zooming back out when putting them away. It would have been nice if the zoom level for each could be set seperately and the game remembered where you want the camera with weapons out or sheathed.

The only thing I miss from Oblivion in regards to third person is being able to rotate the camera, while walking, performing actions and stuff.

It would make perfect sense to run backwards with a weapon/spell drawn as to retreat and attack, and have it dark souls style when you sheath your attack. Best of both worlds.
