Future Fallout Games: The Science Skill

Post » Mon Apr 01, 2013 6:00 am

When Fallout: New Vegas was released, I was surprised that they had decided to merge the "Small Guns" skill with the "Big Guns" skill. They filled the gap by implementing the new "Survival" skill. Which was basically the "Outdoorsman" skill from Fallout 1, but was focused on crafting. I don't know about anyone else, but it feel like Survival only fits because of the Mojave desert's variety of fauna. So, since there's so much talk about "Fallout 4", where would Survival fit in anywhere else besides the Mojave? No where is where, unless it takes place in the Mojave again. But what would replace Survival? Computes! It seems odd that the Science skill pertains to things
such as Chemistry and Biology while also including knowledge of computers. They don't fit to me. So why not split them; keep Science and replace Survival with Computers. This could also implement new game mechnaics aswell(see below).

Science: "The combined knowledge of fields such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics."
  • Dialogue Interactions
  • Creating Chems and Aid consumable
  • Recycle Energy Weapons cells to create/convert ammo
Computers: "The knowledge of computers; hacking terminals, terminating viruses, decoding holotapes"
  • Dialogue Interactions
  • Hacking Terminals
  • Terminating Viruses
  • Decoding Holotapes
?Feedback and criticism is appreciated.

I don't see why Survival shouldn't be useful anywhere else but the Mojave. After all, human society is in ruins everywhere with nature slowly reclaiming all that mankind once possessed. Even in Fallout 3 you had to deal with a wasteland that wasn't all that much different than the Mojave, and I don't see it being much different in any other location. The local flora and fauna wouldn be at somewhat different of course, but it would be the same situation of nature reasserting itself, and large parts of the terrain being wild and untamed. And I don't see much point in having a skill strictly for computers. The role they play in the game is so small that there's really no point in having a seperate skill for them. I think they fit in just fine under the Science skill.

And why don't computers fit as science? If you go to a university to study them, quite often the courses are referred to as "computer science" courses. At the very least they would fall under the category of engineering, which is just another form of science.
