What defines a "pure" Rogue?

For the other two archetypes, their definitions are pretty clean cut. Pure mages stick to strictly magic & robes, warriors use strictly weapons and armor.

But what is a pure Rogue, the third archetype? This has always confused me, since when people say they play a rogue, it could mean so many different things.

Some people play a thief. A pure thief even, is debatable. Do you kill? Do you use strictly one weapon skill? Do you use magic?

The assassin is the more recognizable class. But some people argue that any who use magic are not assassins, and are rather Nightblades.

The names "thief" and "assassin" are so interchangeable in forums and blogs I read, that it's starting to unnerve me. People often name their builds "thief/assassin" which just makes me wonder what a pure thief or assassin would be. Obviously I have a sufficient idea, but there are so many disambiguations to the term "rogue" that I'm starting to doubt that there is a true rogue build.

Thoughts?
