How do you join the Legion? : Fallout: New Vegas

Every time I've played New Vegas I always find myself siding with the NCR. How do I join the Legion instead?

When you eliminate Benny at The Tops, Vulpes Inculta, or a stand in should you have killed Vulpes, will give you The Mark of Caesar, which will grant you safe passage to The Fort, to get there, you'll need to make your way to Cottonwood Cove. I hope this helps.

Does it matter what rep I have with the Legion?

Before obtaining the Mark of Caesar? No. The MoC will reset your negative rep to neutral if you offended them, but if you already obtained the MoC, then you won't have any other chance to side with the Legion without resetting.
