What are these mod things?! So confused!

So, recently I got a gaming PC to play Skyrim and eventually TESO. I thought that you just click download and a mod would appear in your game but apparently not. What are you meant to do to install mods? Also what is this mod manager thing?

Always read the mod's readmes and descriptions. They usually contain installation instructions as well as other important information. If the mod contains an esm or an esp, make sure its active in data files in the launcher. One last thing, if you plan on getting lots of mods you might want to look into downloading BOSS to have it sort your load order.

If you're talking about the nexus mod manager, I can't help you with that as I don't use it and I always install my mods manually.

Esm and esp are the file types used by Skyrim. Esp are your normal mod plugins, and esm's are your master plugins like dlc for instance. Modding isn't too complicated. For the most part you just extract your archive and drag the meshes, textures, scripts, esp/esm into your data folder. Sometimes mods will contain the esp/esm with a bsa file, which is an archive file that bethesda uses. The creation kit wiki might have more on this stuff and its good to read to familiarize yourself with what's out there before delving in.

One last thing that is extremely important in regards to modding and skyrim, is once you play with a mod and make a save in game with it active (specifically if that mod contains scripts) you cannot just turn it off and try to continue playing on that same save. Doing so can destroy your save or cause ctd's.
