Is chainmail light or heavy in real life?

Post » Mon Apr 08, 2013 3:08 am

I've always imagined chainmail to be quite heavy. I am wondering if anyone actually knows for real without surmising or guessing.

I understand armors like Imperial Mithril are light as the material is light but what about iron and steel?

I'm no expert, but I believe it is 'light' in comparison to plate armour, but it is still heavy. It's main advantage is that it allows for increased maneuverability rather than being especially light.

It weighs more than plate and is more cumbersome than self-reliant plate armor (which is to say, sets that are meant to go together and connect.)

I've worn chain-mail before and it was pretty heavy. Idk how heavy it is compared to plate though.

I confused plate armor for jousting armor. Apparently plate armor is in fact allows more movement than modern firefighter gear, although I assume chainmail was cheaper to make as it pieces didn't need to be fitted to each other as much as plate.
