3 million people downloaded the beta. What went wrong?

We now have about 3000 people total on at any one time, max, across all three platforms. That's a retention rate of 0.1%. Has there ever been a bigger demo disaster than this?

Even if we're generous and say that's only 10% of the active playerbase on at any one time, then we're still left with just 1%. Only 1 in 100 people enjoyed the experience enough to stay. That's not 1 in 100 gamers, but 1 in 100 people significantly interested enough in the Crysis experience to download the beta.

That really needs some soul searching somewhere from someone in charge. Was not bothering to budget to fix the terrible networking from Crysis 2, despite having two years to do it, really worth the paltry amount of money you saved in relation EA?

what you have to remember is that a significant amount also play just for the SP. And actually combining 3 platforms its actually 3500-4000.
most definetly a majority of people bought it but they just don't play anymore

Sure, I understand that, I'm not talking sales here, I'm talking about people who enjoy the experience of MP enough to stay.

Even Colonial Marines has more people playing! When one of the most reviled MP games in recent memory has a bigger populaton, you know something went wrong somewhere along the line.

It's a really interesting topic to be sure. I think they tried to split the difference between two types of games. A game like COD, and a game like an older arena shooter. They took the mechanisms from COD such as modules, weapon attachments, kill streaks; jacked up the pace, incorporated the nano suit which made the killing process more difficult/planned out, and bang, you have a video game that is slightly more difficult that COD. Everyone who plays the current Blops 2 is going to play Blops2 because it's familiar and they don't have to learn anything new.

I believe that we live in a day and age where gamers aren't necessarily interested in change. People who play quake will play quake and revile every other video game under the sun like the elitists people that they are, and people who play Blops will stay in their comfort zone.

If you're going to attempt to be revolutionary, you kinda have to go for it all the way and not do it half-heartedly. I think C3 was half-hearted revolutionizing in an attempt to pull together 2 different types of video game players, and they ended up not getting either.
