If you know how to ROLEPLAY, you dont need DLC

Post » Wed Apr 17, 2013 6:48 pm

Seriously, thats why the true roleplayers on the Oblivion boards are able to get 1000+ hours from vanilla oblivion just by using their imagination and making up their own quests/story.

If you need a weapon pack DLC to add life to the game then you're better off playing a capcom hack and slash, cos then things are more spoonfed to you and you dont have to think as much.

Just sayn...

Its not DLC's this game needs, its more customisation options for those of us who DO roleplay (HUD, killcams, spellcrafting etc..)

TES have always prided themselves on the players ability to tell their own story. Well in no game more was this concept diminished than in Skyrim. What good is more DLC if you still have to chug through the intro with each character? What good is more DLC when you're forced into 3rd person when playing as a werewolf?

I can't believe you're serious. Just because you don't NEED something, doesn't mean you can't WANT it. Hey, why stop there? I know how to roleplay, so why even play games? Right? Bethesda, I don't need you no more. I has roleplayz and pretendz.

Well said! We have plenty of tools to roleplay with - DLC would be nice, but far from necessary. All it takes is the right mindset, and a little inspiration.

That said, Tmar, Mirocu, Acadian and the others on the Oblivion forums with long-lived characters are very lucky. Many of us find it difficult to have characters last for thousands of hours!

Exactly, expansions provide more role play opportunities. More options are always better.

One thing is role play.
Other thing is to have more tools to do it, and more stories to do around.
The more the better in any case.

Indeed. I always roleplay. I've been roleplaying for all 2754 hours I've played. How would pretending curve my desire for actual content? Roleplaying serves to fill in the missing story of your player. DLC does the same. How is it a bad thing to want more content? Especially when more than 3 was promised since release.

Oh I hear you bro and I wouldnt disagree, but to reiterate, what good is a Tamriel sized DLC if you have a ball and chain attatched to your leg?

But we have Skyrim as it is. And more content just grant you the chance to just add more variability to your role play.
Take my case for example.
Im a fan of House Redoran since 2002.
And thanks to one of the DLC′s I can properly roleplay my character and use bonemold armor. No matter if its just a fancy visual thing. But I FEEL more comfortable wearing bonemold than anything else, and helps my play.
So more DLC′s just mean more content. More content mean more variability, more freedom of choice, and so on.

^This.

A TRUE Roleplayer doesn't need anything but a bit of imagination. Though at bare minimun we may WANT to have some paper, a few pencils, and some dice (and a couple pots of coffee).

TES have always prided themselves on the players ability to tell their own story. Well in no game more was this concept diminished than in Skyrim. I understand this but how is this a complaint about Skyrim? Oblivion makes you go through the underground dungeon each time to watch the murder of Uriel Septim VII.

mmmm I do agree with the statement but I disagree with the "quality" I guess...
Ill explain.
Morrowind-u roleplayed and the game would reconize ur roleplay by ur skills. U coukd roleplay AND the game would at times reconize, restrict, and reward u with ur roleplay. If u rpd a warrior, ur not getting far into the mages guikd. Etc etc
Oblivion-u roleplayed and the game would reconize ur rp by ur skills and infamy/fame. Meaning to be a top notch theif, u was rewarded and restricted in being good AND skilled at being a theif. Mages guild. Theres debates and quite honestly I didnt no u could pass the mage guild by using scrolls, but if u was rping a warrior, u wouldnt get very far in the mage guild.
Skyrim-u can roleplay but the game only reconizes u as a dragonborn. U can play a hunter/gatherer, but no one will acknowledge it. U can play a magic user and no one will acknowledge it.
Granted I am discounting guards bc without them NO ONE would comment on our choices that made our charecters different.

To me it was easier in one way to rp in morrowind and oblivion and the game and npcs would reconize our class which added and gave possibilities to each charecter. But granted the old system reconize mark the WARRIOR, the caps part.

Now I aint saying skyrim dosent acknowledge the things we do, but u take the guard dialogue out and 95% of whats said about us that would different due to how we are played is taken out.

Long story short. Skyrims a really fun game and very easy to rp in. it is. I do it all the time with mods. But the older games had more to it and c&c due to how u played ur charecter that it wasnt up to the player, but up to ur charcters skills.
With skyrim doing away with the class system, the game cannot reconize what u are unfortuantly HENCE y we can do everything. A warrior as the head mage who only noes the starting spells, a clothy mage as a companian, etc etc.
without classes, the game cant reconize if our charecter, not the player, can do something or not hence y we can do everything.

But to each their own. I am having fun rping in skyrim, but I as the player am having to do most of it in my head and as the player chose not to do something when im used to having the gameworld reenforce my decisions in how I made my charecter and the game world stop me and turn me away bc I dont met the requirements to be something.

Again all personal opionion, and everyone is free to flame me or disagree. Great game, but imo not enough rp value as the older ones.

Seems to me a rather narrow definition of roleplaying, which is, after all a very personal experience, and different for everyone.

I can't agree more that Skyrim makes it nearly impossible to actually role-play your characters. The MQ and every faction are so linear it's painful, not to mention some of the bone-headed things you are required to do in order to finish some of the factions. Skyrim is however a very immersive world and that helps me role-play a lot. Adding some DLC has added some new places to go and more things to do. Not a bad thing, so I'm not sure where the OP was going with that. The new factions however (especially Dawnguard/Vampire) I wish I had never seen and use a mod now to keep that whole quest line from starting until I'm actually ready for it to.

I got your back. You're a reasonable person, so no one should be flaming you. Anyway, I like Skyrim more, but as far as who your character is, the rp ability or potential is lower. BUT in my opinion, things like hearthfire, marriage, the graphics (I know, I know) and animations make it easier to roleplay. That make sense? I never really had a big desire to roleplay in Oblivion, and I played Morrowind after Skyrim (Great game) and at that point I was a roleplayer...in Skyrim. I just didn't have the same will to do it in Morrowind.

Sure Id like more DLC's. But I have everything and more than enough to keep me going. Unlimited possibilities with my imagination and the Dovakihn will live on forever.

Actually that is sorta nonsense.

I roleplay but I still would have liked more. We aren't getting it though unfortunately.

I think it's a very elitist point of view that the OP has. I do nothing but roleplay and I wouldnt say no to more content. Sure, you can make up your own quests/stories for your character(s), but not everyone has that sort of imagination. They might prefer to roleplay through content already in the game, not pulled out of thin air. I don't think that makes them any less of an RP'er than others who prefer to visit their characters friends or map waterfalls. It's just a different way of doing things.

Also, your comments about the intro and forced third person...wut? They may be annoying to some, but it does nothing to diminish the roleplaying aspect of the game.
