God, I loathed combat in the game. A completely failed experiment IMO.
Just have to learn to play; (that's not meant as bad as it sounds). It was unfamiliar at first, but it soon became quite addictive, and I played the game through to the end, then kept playing skirmishes... then started over again. Brilliant game IMO. Like TES it had traps... unlike TES, I recall a snare trap that flips you upside down and has you hanging from one leg while being attacked by a mob... you can actually fight them off upside down, but they expect you to escape by deliberately cutting the rope.
What TES player wouldn't prefer total freedom of blade, and damage based on how well they hit? It's been a lot of years, and the hardware has finally started to catch up. DbtS was waaay ahead of it's time, and there is still nothing that comes close IMO.
