How does Skyrim compare with Oblivion?

Post » Tue Apr 23, 2013 11:19 pm

A friend of mine has been constantly saying to me that I must play Oblivion as I'd love it what with being a huge Skyrim fan. So yesterday I took his advice a and ordered Oblivion goty edition. What should I expect from the game? is it as good/better in your opinion than Skyrim? I realise the graphics wont be as up to date as those in Skyrim but that doesn't really bother me, I'm just interested in peoples opinions of the games in relation to each other and wondering what to expect.
I completed 4 complete play throughs of Skyrim with 4 completely different characters and thoroughly enjoyed all of it, I just feel that there is nothing really left for me to do in the game now especially with no more DLC being released. My friend says that he prefers Oblivion of the two games, does anyone else feel the same way, and if so why?

If you play on PC, you may expect better graphics.

True!
Oblivion is a very tough act to follow...
Possibly the ultimate game?

They don't, as Skyrim is literally on another higher plane of existence all together in comparison. The only thing I think Oblivion has over Skyrim is the more wacky sidequests it has. I prefer Skyrim as it's not nearly as "generic fantasy" as Oblivion is.

Well I personally felt that Oblivion had more replay value .. in fact Skyrim has no replay value for me. Oblivion has better quests that Skyrim too. The thieves guild and dark brotherhood quests are just amazing!

Really, so you think it's better as well. For what reasons?

Skyrim has better gameplay to me but I get all Nostalgic over Oblivion's story and characters. I did recently start playing Oblivion again.

Imo?

Skyrim blows oblivion to... well oblivion. I believe Skyrim is what oblivion should have been all those years ago, but that's unreasonable thinking. I still stand with it though.

As one who is use to TES games, neither really do much above and beyond, they are large and pretty, but not much more to do, to interact with said world, to watch that world turn. I'm kind of expecting that by now in TES.

You might find this helpful:

Honestly I think they are similar (other than the ugly character faces). Both are much more action/RPG than Morrowind was.

I prefer Skyrim over Oblivion. But Oblivion did have its good points. I miss Attributes, for one thing. But if I could only play one of them and not the other, I would play Skyrim.
