Why are vanilla BSA files necessary for gameplay ?

Post » Wed Apr 24, 2013 9:28 pm

OK...let me explain better :

I've unpacked 4 vanilla BSA files (meshes, textures, sounds, voices) for melting with my data folder files.

Everything was done very carefully, respecting overwriting priority, editing Skyrim.INI, etc....but LODs gone crazy !

Nearby objects and scenery are OK...but those distant ones are totally missing.

What have I done wrong ? :ahhh:

(thanks in advance for any help).

PS.: Not so important but one more question : My data folder reached 30 GB. My load time is Looooooooong ! Anything I can do for shrinking that time ?

Yes, leave the files in their BSA archives.

Unpacking bsas should decrease loading times actually, since the files in them are compressed.

Troubleshooting is always best to start from the simplest thing that can go wrong ("is the computer plugged in" style ;)). So as first thing, check that the lod files are the same in the data folder as they are in the bsa (Skyrim-Meshes.bsa, meshes->lod).

To expand on the answer.
The unpacking of compressed files by your CPU on the fly, put less strain on your computer than having to move uncompressed files through the system.
Think of your HD throughput, if it exceed its bandwidth your game has to wait for the rest to load.

Good point, didn't think of it that way.
