Anybody know how to use xNormal?

Im trying to bake a nice detailed normal map for a weapon I made in 3ds Max from a hi poly sculpt I made of it in zBrush.

Whenever I use xNormal to do it, the normal doesn't really look like any of the vanilla ones I've seen.

What am I doing wrong? I'm pretty sure its something to do with the settings (the X+, Y+, Z+ business) but even after a bit of experimentation and googling I cannot find a definitive explanation of getting the program to make normals "the skyrim way".

Anybody got any tips? If you know of a different way to do this I'm all ears
